i need you to put on your smokepole hat. i bought a new in the box traditions deerhunter .50 cal. sidelock, with fiber optic sights for $129.oo bucks. i couldn't pass it up. the reccomended load, using a 240 grain sabot is 70 to 90 grains of pyrodex 2f rs. i will use it for deer and hogs. what do you think ? any better load ideas ? thanks much.

I usta' load my deerhunter with 100 gr of powder. Don't have that one anymore, I gave it to my nephew. I do load my Hawken with 100 gr but some on this forum have gotten me to thinkin' that 70 gr might be enough and produce less fouling.
There are others here know better than I do tho' hope you get another reply.
Just my two cents.

Sounds like you got a decent deal on it. First off, I'd always stick within the manufacturers guidelines. I'd start it low and check fowling and accuracy. Then slowly work it up towards the max. When your accuracy starts to suffer then back up to the load that was more accurate.
Part of how much powder you'll want to use is determined by the barrel length. If you're shooting a 26" barrel then I'd opt for something right in the middle to start, if you're shooting a 32" then I'd start closer to the 90 mark.
I sure don't recommend going higher than the factory recommends... Also, double-check (in the manual) your twist rate for your barrel. If it is slow, then you'll want to use either a patched round ball or a mini-ball. If it is relatively fast then sabot is ok.
Email me if you have any questions, and there are many people here that have good (even if conflicting) advice. There's no cut-and-dried way to do it.
