Just make sure its not a model 597 remington.....your enemy will be laughing his/her * off while your digging in your pocket for a jack knife to dig out jammed up shells[:D]after the first shot. that said nothing against a 22 just make sure its not a jammaamatic.
on edit....i fugure my life is worth more than it... depending on a cheap gun...jmho
Adam! Thank you for another SHTF thread! Haven't had a decent go at these for about a year, since Katrina.
#1. Any gun that takes a round that you can't buy at Wal-Mart or Big 5 will be useless and obsolete. (when SHTF, you ain't carrying 2000 rounds of your special chronometered reloads anywhere. You will be packing light and have to scavenge ammo along the way).
#2. Since you are in America, forget 7.62x39 (unless you plan to travel to Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia, or Asia)
#3. Most common calibers you will find in the U.S.A = .22LR, 12 gauge, 9mm, then it is probably a tie between .38 Spl/.357 Mag, .45 ACP, .223, .30-06, and maybe .30-30.
#4. .22LR is quiet and will kill you enough food to survive (possums, rats, gophers, deer? - Highball, I have GOT to see that video!)
#5. 12 gauge is loud and will kill ANYTHING, at least up close.
#6. If you aren't trained to be one, then don't pretend to be a sniper. JUST SURVIVE!
So... my recommendation is to get a 6" Ruger MkI/II/III pistol (I am confident that I could kill a possum within 100 yards with one of these), and have a 12 gauge available, either pump, side-by-side, or over/under. You can kill any man/animal within 25 yards with one.

All you big bore guys...consider this. You get hungry and decide that that rabbit you are looking at would make a nice supper. You shoot it.
Now...2 ridges over, the latest rendition of vampire has you located...and knows that you are well armed. Your survival index just went down several notches.. a .22 becomes washed out within a few hundred yards...
I posted the "Culvert" because it is often brought up by the wanna-bees....they just do not grasp the idea that this country is well-stocked with combat vets.....the odds are small that a (close-range)shot out of a culvert will take out a thinking warriour.
The other idea firmly planted in some people is the "I will come to your house, in the event"...they do not seem to grasp the idea...food is dirt cheap today..and the failure to have TWO cans of beans is proof posititve that THAT individual will NOT be welcome around me.....and in the event of major troubles...the condition is instantly RED...and for those that have no idea what that means..good luck.
I don't normally agree with Highball (in fact, this might be the first), but I agree 100%.
You'd not want to give your location away to your enemies. I also think you'd not want to "waste" ammo. There's more than one way to kill an animal, and it doesn't have to be done via a bullet. Save your bullets for the enemy's enema.
And, Highball also touched on something else -- cheap food. Come the "revolution" (if there is to be one) the value of the dollar is going into the poopter. There would be zero chance of it remaining a viable currency -- the price of the dollar is determined by confidence in the dollar. If you're in the middle of a civil war, there's zero confidence in the dollar.
Food will become trememdously expensive. So will everything else. Since cash would be close to worthless, your survival is going to depend heavily on your ability to barter.
Since most of our nation is filled with people who couldn't survive a three-day weather emergency, who have no survival skills outside of the board room, etc., food will likely become the currency of choice.
As for us, we don't stock a whole lot, but we've lived through enough blizzards to know that you need to keep a few weeks worth of food in the cupboard and we do. I'm betting we could go close to a month eating three meals a day on what we normally keep on hand.
If you're looking for sanctuary/restocking from someone else, then you better bring currency. Currency is going to be canned foods, bottled water, etc.

My vote would be for a pump. I'd want more than two shells, and the pump is just darned reliable.
Thanks for all the responses!!! I like the SKS idea, but am leaning toward the Kel-Tec Sub2000. I like the idea of sharing ammo and mags with my Glocks.

Would store some gasoline but only have a basement and just don't want that down there.
Storing fresh gas seems like it would be a hassle. You have to rotate it frequently or it'll go bad
They got that Stabil stuff to keep it longer but you still would need to rotate it every so often. I think I will probably just get some empty surplus 5 gal cans to keep empty till needed.

I've seen too many O/U misfires/failure to fire.
Okay I have to ask. What's SHTF mean?
Depends on who you ask
1) Survival in Hostile Terrain Following castastrophic events
2) S*** Hits The Fan
Basically SHTF means a breakdown in social order where one must rely on himself or a small group of like-minded individuals to survive.

Can I come stay with you guys if it comes to this. I have a feeling my freinds will be more worried about hair, make-up and clothes.
"C'mon baby, we gotta do it if the human race is to survive"
Sure, after all, we're going to need women if humanity is going to continue [;)]
"C'mon baby, we gotta do it if the human race is to survive"
I think heard something like that before on a show/movie...
"I think its about time we start repopulating the earth"
"We've only been down here for 3 hours"
