Art shanties on Medicine Lake

I went to this yesterday and had a fun time. It is a free event that these people put on purely for the fun of it. Every shanty has a different theme/clever idea it is based on. My favorites were the Naughty shanty where 2 pretty girls read your naughty fortunes, passed out candy cigarettes, and when there were no kids in attendance would tell some pretty salty jokes.

The Department of Everything Else was very clever as well. It is where you apply for citizenship in Shanty town, get permits for everything else, and write down solutions to non-existent problems.

There were human powered rides and games as well as some refreshments to buy.

One guy made a wind powered ice fishing rig which actually worked as well as a type of "tip up" which would fire an Estes rocket if a fish took the bait.

One was a working sauna and periodically people in swimsuits would run out and roll on the ice and snow before running back in again.

There was a dance party shanty which was packed shoulder to shoulder with people dancing to loud music.

There were others as well but these were my favorites.

According to a friend of mine he says the ice on Mille Lacs is about 20" thick or so but out towards the flats, away from the shoreline, there are some big cracks and some thin spots. The lake in the video had about 14 inches where the shanties were. This whole winter has been crazy mild.

In 1973 we had an ice fishing contest on lake Marion. There were so many cars and people that the ice was pressed down so when you cut a hole water would shoot out of the hole. We had to move all cars off the ice. My son got 2nd place with a 8in 12oz northern. He won a Shakspear rod with a pfluger real. 1st place was a base boat and motor. We lived 2mi north of the lake and would get up at sun up and catch several northerns before work, some 5, 6, & 7 lbs. The good old days!

I'm only 15 minutes North of Lake Marion. It is still a good lake to fish in. The largemouth bass are plentiful as are the northerns. Walleye you have to work at catching and the crappies are in there but run small.
