These sort of cheapo ak knock-off's, Saiga's...are they any good?
Does anyone own one?
I have a friend that wants a AK in .223 to share ammo with his AR's and it's the cheapest new one I can find for him.

I've up-graded mine with the Red-Star adjustable FCG and Choate stock for US compliance
I'm tempted to buy a Veper (the other Russian AK knock-off) but the 308 is about 2X the price of the Siaga ... I've talked to several people that own Veprs ... It seems people have mixed feelings about them ... people buy them because they feel more substantial, and feel that they are better made.
BUT
People that are selling them don't like them because they're too heavy ... go figure!

EAA has highcap mags for the Saiga coming soon, I hope since I have some EAA mags on order.
I don't have a Saiga yet. Buddy of mine has one and loves it. I have shot his and found it just as accurate as my SKS and AK. There are websites out there to turn it back into AK configuration.

I have the Saiga in 7.62x39 -- a fantastic gun for the price.
I would suggest caution in using commercial American-made ammo in Saiga. You'll find that the free-floating firing pin will leave a nice little mark on the primer just from loading the round into the chamber. I don't know what ammo you friend is using in his ARs, but there could be some risks of a slam-fire if the primers are soft.
Some of the more expensive AKs (like the VEPR) have a spring dampened firing pin which is effective in preventing contact with the primer until the trigger is pulled.

Thanks for the info and Kimberkid that is one fine looking rifle. I guess I mis-spoke and meant they were cheap compared to a SAR.
I'm clear, you're clear, everybody's clear...SHOCK!!!
So these won't take AK mags or can't be dremeled to take one?

No but you could modify the gun to.
