Drive-In Theaters/Things Just "Don't" Change!

For "Old Time's" sake, the Mrs and I went to a real Drive-In
Theater last night.
Sure brought back a lot of memories of how things stay the
same.
My girl-friend, now Mrs. Creek, hardly every missed a weekend of
going to the Drive-In, during the summer months of the 1960's.
Heaven Forbid, sure enough-here the young people of today were
drinking beer and some were "even" spending more time making out
than they were actually "watching" the movie.
NOPE, some things just don't change.
Well, yes and no----Now we "actually" watched the movie.
Dang, they were right "You're only young once"!

A few years ago my wife and I went to the drive-in at the town where I grew up. We left after the movie almost sick from all the cigarette smoke. I guess since indoor movies don't allow them it funnels the smokers into the ever decreasing number of drive-in's. I won't go back, it wasn't that neat...

Last year while visiting my Mom in Indiana. I took Toolbabe and Toolbrat to see a Drive in movie. Toolbrat had never been to one (we dont have any where we live). She loved it. Could not belive how people would make a party of it. Sitting out in lawn chairs. Kids in there PJs. It was cool. I wish we had one here.

I take my soon-to-be Mrs. to the drive-in all the time. There's one about 8 miles from my house and they play tripple features. We'll be there again next sat. night, just like last sat, and the sat before.

We used to have several here and as kids it was fun - the Hillcrest, the Lincolndale, the East 30 - now I think there is one up toward the lakes, near Auburn/Garrett. Think I'll take a closer look at the billing and maybe go up once and refresh old memories. The popcorn and hot dogs in the car was always fun -- the concession stand always had a lot of goodies. I think the sound probably got better when they started transmitting a signal to your car's FM radio, but my days were all back when you hung the "lo-fi" speaker on the window. As for sound quality, well, we didn't know any better...

Do y'all remember hanging the "Pic" mosquitoe burners in the car to ward off the critters? How about the play grounds they always had at the front so the kids could go do their thing while Mom and Dad did theirs?
Man, I sure miss the South Main Drive-In located in Houston, Texas. I REALLY learned ALOT there as a teenager [and I mean ALOT!]

We have a Walmart right where one of our drive-ins used to be!

It had been shut down for many years and I don't think the screen was even still there when they bought the property ... however the marquee was. It was called "The Chief Drive-In" and the marquee was a large American Indian head with the marquee in place of the headdress ... I think some (possiably militant) historic activists got it named as a historic landmark ... Walmart restored it and uses it ... I go by it several times a week, If I think of it I'll snap a pic and post it ...

We used to have 3 drive-in's in town but unfortunatly all have been closed down for many many years ... those were the days, progress? [V]

Many years ago on the very outskirts of town, there used to be an X-rated drive in. There were nothing but fields around it, so they could see if anyone was parked and watching over the fence. You could get away with it for a little while. Very educational in those days. [}:)]

All of them within 80 miles are gone as far as I can tell.

Used to be a ton of them back in the good ol' days.

Drive-ins are great, if you can find one anymore.

The way to do it, in nice weather, is to take a pickup truck and folding chairs. Pull into the stall facing away from the screen and sit in the back. Bring your own chips, popcorn and drinks.

Bringing your own probably contributed to the demise of the drive-in. Theaters don't make money selling tickets, but from concessions.

There are so few left now, its sad.[:(]

There is still one within 12 miles of me, but instead of the whole car getting in for one price, they charge by the head.
Its the same as for a seat in a set down theater that the same people own in town.

They dont have the hang on your window speaker, as in the old days, but you turn it to an FM signal, that is only good for about 1/4 mile, then it fades a way. But the sound is better than those nasty speakers.

It wont be long before they are all gone.[xx(]

Actually saw something on the news here a week or so ago about a comeback. One guy opened an old one and it stayed full. Then he opened another...repeat. Now he has several and word is others are now seeing the profits and it seems to be a trend. Time will tell.

Certainly used to be a social event, and private at the same time if you could hide from your buddies. [;)]
