Found some quicksand today...

It's been raining off and on here in Phx this week and apparently the mountain areas are rather hydrated. A couple of us go up to the canyons between New River and Bumble Bee and hike the river valley for fun and to look for old ghost towns, artifacts, and the occasional clandestine methamphetamine facility. Basically we go looking for the first two but come prepared for the third as they are often encountered in that area and are usually not to friendly to passerbys[xx(] I was hiking along the edge of the riverbed and about got swallowed. The ground looked damp, but it was rather fluid. In one step I went from the surface to being almost waist deep in sand and sinking fast[:0] I had that SKS-M (the mower mower[;)]) slung on my back, and the Hakim in hand and them heavy SOB's were more or less an anchor in that situation, somehow I managed to get out without either gun sinking to the bottom, don't know how, but I guess in the midst of my flailing and screaming like a woman I managed to throw 'em clear of the pit, they still lawn-darted halfway into the ground but weren't in the really fluid stuff I guess. I didn't even know they had quicksand here in AZ, I'm guessing the riverbed is probably a little soil and dirt over a sandstone/limestone base. Probably have some sinkholes where the waterlevel is close to the surface and doesn't drain off very quickly. We found a few more pits today, but they were only a couple feet deep. Scary thing is that there are free range cattle along that river all the time, I wonder how many disappear. Anybody else have any experiences with quicksand? I've heard that if you get horizontal you can more or less swim through it. I guess the trouble comes when you try to stay vertical. Dunno, anybody got any info on this? It surprised the hell outta me[:0]

I was stuck in some man made quicksand once. I was at Kentucky lake by Brownsville. They had dredged a part of the lake where we were staying. I just had to be the one to try to walk across it.[:0][xx(]. Had to swim out of it. Dont want to do it again.

I've been to Kentucky Lake, there's some pretty swampy areas along the shore, the quicksand wouldn't scare me nearly as much as all the snapping turtles and water mocassins that might get me while trying to get out[;)]

We've canoe a stretch of the Clear Fork, which is a tributary of the Brazos River, where it meets the Brazos there's a stretch that will swallow you up pretty quick.

If you keep moving at a good pace you can skim through it, slow down and you will get shorter by the second. We hang on to the canoe and just keep pushin'. Weird feelin'.
