My computer has started giving me problems when I turn it on it says Detecting IDE Drives and does not load. I have to shut it down and restart it (by the way a good whack[B)] on the side also works). What can I do to fix it? I'm running win xp pro.

My son's friend has a 4 month old Compaq, and when he turns it on, get's only the red "Compaq" on the monitor and nothing else! Compaq is trying to help, but no cigar! Any ideas on how to get it to go past this and boot up?

Here are people who had similar problems:

    google

This thread has a C&P for a solution on Win95/98. Might help, even though it's old.

There are lots of people suggesting checking the CMOS battery, checking cables and whatnot.

The other things checked out OK then?

Still a power supply is only about $100 or so and you can change it yourself. I spilled water on my PowerBook and the Apple store charges $95 labour. Plus $70 for the new keyboard. I've just discovered one of my USB ports isn't working. I think I'll just use the other one rather than pay the exorbitant shop prices.

Yeah I checked everything else cables, connections etc. I can get a 550w for 30.00 and it looks simple enough I think I can mange putting it in.

It is very hard to solve a start-up problem with out seeing your Puter. It appears that some how your start-up settings have been change .This is a very common problem if you don't have an anti-virus protection .You problem is a reboot-redirect virus. Witch changes your net-bios in start up. If you can get your puter to boot go to start -run -type msconfig -ok -selective start-up. Go to startup tab-uncheck all programs and try to restart. This turns off all programs witch one is a redirect startup program .You may need to get an up to date virus protection.

Yeah it will come on after I turn it off and on a few times. Ok I un-checked them all so I'll see if that did anything.

That is strange. I also am running XP & have the exact same problem with my laptop. Except it will not reboot. I have ordered a new hard drive. May be a virus loose that's causing this.
