I know it isn't New York . . . what do you all think? My vote is Nevada, although the Silver State too has begun to slide down a slipperly slope.

I'd say Georgia, of course I'm biased. I've lived here all my life.

I've lived all over our great Country, and I like this place (Oregon), best. No sales tax, a "must issue" CCW, can't pump your own gas ( except for motorcycles), inexpensive homes in the country, and some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere.

The downside is that many Kalifornia socialists have moved here in the last 20-30 years, and they're trying to re-engineer the society.

I've heard good things about the Dakotas, and Montana has a very low population. I assume Alaska is good too. These are just impressions; feel free to tell me if I'm mistaken. Frankly, except for part of Montana, I wouldn't like the cold weather...

I am partial to the Evergreen State myself, but I would think Vermont or Alaska would have more freedom and less firearm legislation.

NH is way more free than VT. We have no income tax, no sales tax, houses in the country are cheap (except along the border of MA), a $10 shall-issue CCW w/ no training requirement and 2 week time limit for issuance. Also, you can leagally carry openly loaded w/o a license or concealed and unloaded, also without a license. We're also the only state in the country to not have a manditory seatbelt law.

I forgot to mention that there's no age limit on getting a CCW here. A 10 year old could walk into the police station, fill out an aplication and get one (it has happened). The CLEO has no discression whatsoever. A person must be 18 to have a handgun in their possession without an adult present, though, so you don't see a lot of todlers packing.

Wyoming. It has the lowest census in the US and is a republican state. No state tax. You can carry. You are allowed to drink and drive as long as your not in town. Its the original wild west and the people want it to stay that way.

As a native son, I cannot argue with anything chappsyny has said. The only problem with NH is the damn squatters moving in from the lower (in all ways) New England states, plus NY / NJ, bringing their puerile liberal politics with them. NH is the most free at the moment, but I question how long it will stay this way. Damn flatlanders are a big part of the reason I'm moving . . . and the entire reason I'm leaving NH . . . my wife has only been in the country for six years and she already hates the Massholians so much she refused to move into southern NH where they are thickest. Says a lot about the Massholian "culture" that they can so totally alienate someone with prior exposure to them in such a short period of time. Says even more about the culture that the best they can find for a Senate seat is Kennedy and Kerry. Sorry for the vent.

Alaska would be a good choice. Don't be blinded by Vermont's CCW lenience; in many other ways it marches to the same drumbeat as Boston (again because of the squatter influx): high taxes and liberal politics - don't forget Howard the Duck Dean was elected there - and their Congressman for decades has been the only (openly) Socialist in Federal office - Bernie Saunders. I don't know enough to be sure, but I believe Idaho should be high on the list. But perhaps clouder and DWS would like to keep those matters quiet so they don't get swamped with immigrants! Wish we'd kept NH a secret! [:(!]

Interesting tip about Wyoming. Maybe if all of us get forced out of our present circumstances we can go there and start a long country road with lots of acreage between properties, subsist off Internet businesses and have shooting parties on Saturdays or something. [:D]

It is not North Dakota. We have terrible crime rates. Our taxes are very high. Our pollution is lousy. Our hunting and fishing is very poor. Pheasants flew south and never returned. Constant police brutality.

Do you self a favor and drive around. Unless it is winter time, then come on in and stay awhile.[:D][:D][:D]

    Travis

You live in a different part of North Dakota than me!! Crime rate is one of the lowest in the Nation, taxes are lower than most other states, there is plenty of game yet (I saw that Mule deer picture), I can carry concealed with a permit that is easy to get, I can carry open, I know of NO police brutality cases that have come to Court (I know lots of cops and that includes BIA officers), etc. You must have had some personal bad experiences that brought you to that conclusion. Think it would be better anywhere else? Nope.

My vote is not a state of the Union, but a state of your mind. You are as free as you allow yourself to be.

X-ring, mpolans . . . anyone who thinks winter temperatures are in positive numbers, especially two digit poisitive numbers will not be comfortable. The politics remain conservative overall, but every year brings an influx of 10K or more, most of whom come with the leftist viewpoints which made their former abodes such cesspools.

I only wish PA had the protection laws like Texas, the only things that make PA free is shall issue CCW and Class III guns other than that there are are lot of screwed up laws in this state such as when confronted by trespasers yuo are supposed to hide in your home and call the police and suck your thumb[:(!] Criminals are protected in PA[:(!][:(!][:(!] I know this from first hand experiance! The time is coming that I will pack up and move due to the heqavy bumrush of city slickers and their liberal ways of thinking much like NH is getting.

I belive in Texas it is Ok to use deadly force to protect personal property if it is at night? There are 2 cases I am thinking about. one is where an older man used an Ar-15 to stop and kill a thief who was stealing his truck during the night and he was not charged. also a couple of years ago a punk was trying to steal an AC window unit from a house and was shot and killed, homeowner not charged, I know it sounds strange but i have heard this. Maybe Nunn has ideas?

Shhh...Dont tell anyone Oklahoma is pretty good to once you get out of Tulsa & OKC.
Shall issue CCW, LEO's sign off on C3 while you wait. Cheap homes, land, state owned low cost hunting preserves, reasonable taxes.
Draw backs, low wages, high unemployment outside of the urban areas around 6-8%, alot of "good ol boy" politics in the rural areas (Aka Little Dixie).
The metro areas have the liberials and try to rule, or force legislation on the rural areas. But the rural "Lil Dixie Boys" pull alot of weight.
Example: Metro area passes legislation outlawing Cock Fighting, so the Dixie Boys dump their chickens out at the governors mansion. That law is not being enforced.
