Gun you thought you wanted until you shot it?

I always wanted a Winchester 1897 shotgun. Being one of the earliest examples of repeating shotguns, they look really neat. I had a chance to pick one up for a fair price at a shop in Indy. (The guy said since it was "pre-1899" I didn't have to do a yellow sheet on it. I didn't argue with him but I do know better.)

I wasn't at all pleased with the way it shot. It could be that my particular gun didn't function quite right, but it seemed to take quite a bit of oommph to work the action, and of course, I skinned my thumb a couple of times. It was one of the first to go when I had to start reducing my collection to a functional battery. I sure as heck wish I had known about GB before I got down to the nitty-gritty. I've parted with a few collectible pieces at shooter prices in the local shop.

What did you think you really wanted until you actually shot it?

The first Desert Eagle I ever bought was the 44 mag ... it's big & heavy and to a guy that never shot a handgun bigger than a 45ACP it has a bit of recoil ... add to that, shooting it is fairly expensive ... but the DE is COOL!

Anyway, it didn't stay around long and I traded it for something I would shoot ... don't even remember what it was now, but 6 months or so later and the guy I'd traded it to wanted to get rid of it ... So I generously traded him an old beater car I had worth about $300 for it ... took it out and shot it, remembered why I got rid of it and sold it again, but this time I made some $$$ on it [;)]

A couple years ago, I saw a two-tone D.E. in 44mag ... It was way cool and I had to have it ... took it out and shot it and again, remembered why I got rid of my last one ... sold it about a year later.

Would I ever buy another ... yeah, probably [:o)]

Model 70 Winchester in 338 cal. Bought and sold 2 of them, one would shoot acc with 250 gr.slugs only, the other would not shoot acc with any thing, and they both kicked the H*** out of me,[V] Bought a Remington model 700 BDL, Out shoots the Winchesters with a LOT less recoil.[:D] I have Friends in Utah that have PRE 64 model 70S in 30-06 Have shot them, their heavy and they kick the H*** out of me .[xx(][xx(]

The Ruger 1022. I wanted one forever and finally got one and it shot like crap. I will stick to the Win. 61 or the Browning take down and just be very careful.

bought a baby eagle in .40 that looked like it'd be lots of fun, and seemed to fit my hands well while just holding it. After shooting it though, it just didn't feel right. I've tried giving it to my dad and oldest brother and neither will take it for the same reason. My wife however fell in love with it so it's hers now..

Smith and Wesson model 60. I couldn't hit the side of a barn with that damn thing. Recoil and the overall feel of it wasn't bad, but a bad guy would have had to have been 2 feet in front of me for me to have hit him with it![:D]

Mosin-Nagant M38. Wanted it for a pickup gun. Dealer gave me 20 rounds of 200 grain Albanian ammo. Thought I could handle recoil. This gun kicked the dog crap out of me. Now resides in the gun cabinet.

I had a Sporterized Nagant Type 44 that had that same recoil problem. Here's how a gunsmith fixed it for me:

Ugly as sin, but it does reduce the recoil. Roboman is about to become it's new owner

    Beretta 96 Vertec.

Grip size is just too small. Didn't think it would bother me as much as it does when I bought it.. Fits my gf's hands pretty good thu. She is kinda scared of the recoil thu, she'll get used to it eventually I'm sure..

S&W 296, 44 Spcl with one of those titanium cylinders. The 329 in 44 Mag. would be much the same.

Well, not that I do not shoot it....but not much. Violent recoil.

    Ok-hear I go;
    S$W 5906 (piece-o-crap)bad crown.

S$W 642 (it was ok, just wanted bigger)

Rock island .45( tried to trade it for a PJK-9HP that was nice at $260, the gun store owner laughed at me)

SIG 239-9, nice gun, got bored with it. Mags hard to find & spendy.

Browning HP .40, sweet gun-pain in the butt for wife to use and mags are hard to find.

Taurus PT-145. was agreat gun except for the fact it would not fire most ammo. Bad striker. Would have fixed it, but the wife hated it.She wanted a Walther P-22, so I traded....next.

Walther P-22 TINKER TOY. The end.

Makarov PM. Would rather just have a 9mm.

I bought a Maadi/Helwan Brigideer, what a P.O.S.! After the 1st 200 rounds the rials on the slide started to to show signs of battering like the thing was'nt heat treated properly, I had my dealer send it back to SOG and they repaired it.As soon as I got it back I sold it and bought a hungarian made copy of the browning highpower. I like it much better.

Only two guns I drooled for and ended up getting rid of them after I tried them. The desert eagle 44mag, heavy and couldn't figure out what i would do with it since I didn't want to carry it or shoot it at the range. I was lucky the owner was a friend and let me try out before I bought it. Cool though. the other was a PPK/s. the slide was amazingly hard to rack, low mag capacity and not as acurate as I would have liked. I made a couple of bucks on that one though. I have a chinese copy of the Browning 22 that I can't figure out what to do with also. cheaply made and haven't had an interest to shoot. I have a real Browning 22 and there is NO comparison.
