WVU to teach 'Tradition of Hunting'

Associated Press - Feb. 17, 2004

MORGANTOWN - Hunting has always been a part of West Virginia's culture, and soon it will be part of higher education.

Two assistant professors at West Virginia University have won a $34,000 grant from the R.K. Mellon Family Foundation to develop "The Tradition of Hunting" for the fall semester.

John Edwards and James Anderson, who teach wildlife and fisheries resources, will cover topics including the evolution of hunting in society, its role in wildlife management, traditions, ethics, animal rights, gun control and economic impact.

The course could help shape the perceptions of non-hunting, anti-hunting and undecided students, Edwards said Wednesday. A diverse group would fuel lively debates and provide insight into how society views hunting.

"Although teaching another course in the fall may reduce our time spent hunting, we both believe that this is an important contribution to a tradition that we hold in such high regard," Edwards said.

West Virginia is one of the few states where the number of hunters has not been declining, said Hoy Murphy, a spokesman for the state Division of Natural Resources. As many as 400,000 West Virginians in a state of 1.8 million hunt or fish, or both.

Combined, they generate nearly $700 million a year for the state economy, buying licenses, lodging and equipment, Murphy said.

The DNR offers many hunting-related courses across the state, and anyone born after Jan. 1, 1975, must go through a safety course to obtain a hunting license. That program was created to reduce the number of hunting accidents and injuries.

Some DNR classes examine heritage, wildlife management and economic impact, "but we don't do it on the in-depth basis a college course would," Murphy said
