TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked! up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona

Phoenix New Times has spent more than a decade reporting on the serious abuse of power by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio since he was first elected in 1992. Shamelessly promoting himself as the "toughest sheriff in America", Arpaio was once Arizona's most popular politician. But his popularity is plummeting as the public learns details of horrendous jail conditions, reckless police operations and Gestapo-like activities against political rivals.

If he is abusing his power I wish a hell of a lot more sheriffs would do the same.

As far as running the Jail, I agree, however this guy has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar in things not pertaining to the Job.

Evidently there are those that dont think he is the man for the job..

quote:Top Ten Reasons to RECALL Joe Arpaio
1: With Arpaio, real law enforcement takes a backseat to publicity stunts. 6: The self proclaimed "Toughest Sheriff in America " is too fearful to debate other candidates.

2: He lives in a fantasy world of self-importance. 7: Arpaio routinely abuses his authority for personal, political, and vindictive reasons.

3: Millions of tax dollars have been wasted on lawsuits 8: Many community leaders and concerned organizations have looked beyond the smokescreen to see the corruption and incompetence of the Arpaio administration.

4: He is responsible for a critical and dangerous shortage of personnel in both in the jails and patrol. 9: Sheriff Joe Arpaio has deceived, misinformed and outright lied to the public!

5: Hundreds of current sheriff's office employees, represented by a number of employee organizations, have expressed a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Arpaio. 10: Arpaio's self-serving and ego-driven actions have severely damaged relations between the sheriff's office and other government organizations.

Any evidence of wrong doing, or just baseless claims by those who oppose him?

Good leaders usually have the most bitter enemies.

Then again, I have read at least one story that would suggest he isn't all that gun-friendly. I believe it was a self-defense case and it was actually posted here on Gunbroker if I'm not mistaken.

I remember that it was a defensive shooting case and Arpaio made some comment about how he would see if the guy was guilty of murder or something. It was almost as if he was arrogant enough to believe he was judge, jury and executioner.

I've also seen video footage of him walking through his tent city. The prisoners actually seemed to look at him like grandpa or a father figure. Then again, they may have gotten special favors (like bologna that WASN'T green) for acting that way on camera.

Sorry Rosie that just is not true...The Supreme Court recently rlued that the Sheriff of McIntosh County Ga did illegal things during the last election, but also ruled that they were not "illegal enough" to put him out of office....

evidence does not always = getting put out of office

Man, you ain't kiddin' about that one. He and his "assistant" are as crooked as politicians can get. I used to work for the guy, and while I agree with his jail policies, I do not agree with the rest of his crap. He basically wants the sheriffs department to be his own personal military.

Rldowns is right....he is a crook! Also...GOOD LUCK if you want to get an NFA weapon sign off in Maricopa county, he won't do it!

Being anti-gun is good enough reason for me not to like him.

The guy's a bit full of himself. I do like his jail policies but I wish they'd make him 'warden' instead of 'sheriff'[xx(]

    Love them Beavers
