My latest scrimshaw attempts. The first is a rose pendant on bone.
The second is my first attempt at scrimming on Abalone shell. Works a little different.

"UNTIE!"
"Sita" ---- isn't that Syrian for "grandmother"?
[?]I really don't know if that's Syrian for Grandmother or not. It is the name of a woman from Trinidad that I know. I don't think she's anyones grandmother, yet.[:D]

Excellent work!
How do you apply the color on both projects? I've seen the black knapped on and rubbed in but I am curious as to how you apply the colors.
Is the Abalone harder to work on than the bone?
Best.

Nononsense
I apply the color with permanent colored inks. I often use a 'Sharpie' permanent marker. After applying the color I buff it on a buffing wheel. If I want more color I buff by hand.
Abalone is not harder to work than bone, just different. You can feel the difference, don't know how to describe it exactly. It is more porous and I have to be careful of not over inking.

I have not seen scrimshaw on a seashell before - it is very interesting. Nice work, by the way!
Ideas are far more powerful than guns. We don't let our people have guns. Why should we let them have ideas?

That is some stuff. The bone intrigues me... is it about 2.5" tall?
Very nice workmanship. How long have you been doing this?

With this type media. Only two or three years.

Is the abalone different because it has layers?

The layers are part of it. The brittleness also contributes to the difference.

It is about 1 1/2" X 1 1/4". The abalone shell is 3" long X 1 3/8" wide.

Like to see the picture of the powderhorn when you can post it. I am always admiring other folks work, and looking for new ideas.
