Powdersmoke or any other B/P shooters?

I picked up Dustins new 50 cal, cap and ball today. This one is new in box but has been at the shop for a few years. It's a CVA Bushwhacker. Have you ever heard of these? I went on the CVA website and they no longer make this model. Was there a problem with these, or did they just change the name.
Dustin and I and a few friends are going to shoot the gun today. Bryan is also going to shoot, his grandfathers handmade 50 cal. Thompson Center Hawkin. It hasn't been shot in 10 years since he passed away. I took it to the gunshop and had it all checked over to be sure it is ok. The bore shines like a mirror. But thats to be expected, Ma's dad was very meticulous when it came to cleaning his guns.
Ma's uncle is going to instruct us as I know absolutly nothing about these smokepoles. Ill try and remember to take some pictures. Chris's dad would be grinning ear to ear if he new his grandson was going to shoot the Hawkins. Hope he likes it, hopefully he can drop a deer or two with it in his lifetime like his grandpa did.

Not sure about the Bushwacker, what kind of gun is it? percussion, flint or inline?

On any BP gun you need to make sure it is clean. These guns wil need cleaning every 3-5 shots, not thourough but clean enough to reload with ease. after done shooting a complete tear down and scrubbing is in order.

Also on a flint gun, as little a possible in the flash pan with 4f powder, too much will burn your eyebrows. Just use what it takes to make it go off.

On the Hawken, restrcit yourself to 100 grains of powder or less.
Do not usee too much patch on patch and ball.

Always make sure the fire is out before reloading, if there is a smoldering ember in there you can be in for a surprise.

Missfires are bad in BP guns, allow plenty of time for a delayed shot.

Have lotsa fun and be safe!!!!

    Lonnie: It's a CVA percussion.

I'd bet you could look through the CVA website and choose the minimium of the maximium loadings, in other words, look to see which gun has the lowest maximium load and use that as your maximium. Depending on the barrel length the extra powder might not help anyway.
Have fun pa, they are a blast to shoot (pun intended)

We got back from the range, we shot both percussion rifles. Chris's dads was right on, and Dustins new one was shooting high. We got it sighted in and the kids had a ball. Then Uncle Jeff brought out his Flintlock, that was really fun. It is accurate I was hitting the turkey clanger off hand at 100 yds.
Then we broke out the 17 and the 22's and did some clanger shooting.
All in all it was a fun day! Bryan loved shooting his grandpa's 50 cal. so much he wants to use it in the regular deer season. I took the camera and forgot to take some pictures.
Oh yeah, and we also shot my buddies inline. Dustin showed Bryan how to take his grandpas gun apart, and clean and oil it.
    Life is good!!!

Pa the Bushwacker was one of CVAs middle priced guns. It did not go over as well as expected due to the fact that most wanted either a higher priced gun such as the CVA Hawkin or a cheaper gun such as the Plainsman. Also CVA has a habit of producing guns with one name then changing just a couple of things on it then renameing it. Depending on the length of the barrel, it will work on some other models of CVA rifles. As to loading it, it will handle up to 100 grains of FFF or FF with no problem. You will know when you have put too much powder in when it blows the hammer back to 1/2 cock when it goes off. The Bushwacker was discontinued in 1994. The Bobcat Hunter took its place in 1995. I will venture to guess that the Bushwacker barrel will fit on the Bobcat. I have one of the 1995 Bobcats and it has wood stock. CVA switched to a plastic stock on the Bobcat around 1998. If the barrel is the same as the Bobcat then I would use the load that I use in the Bobcat, 65 grains of FFF with a patched round ball. The ol lady has taken several deer with the Bobcat. You should have a good shooter in the Bushwacker.

Ok Jim thanks: He did tell me he bought five of them several years ago and the one I bought was the only one left. It seems to shoot just fine.
