Self-defense rifle or shotgun

Hey folks -

I just posted a similiar question on the "experts" forum, but I wanted to see what you all say here. I have a cabin in the woods upstate. No nieghbors nearby. I've got several rifles and a 12ga up there already, but I am looking for a high capacity semi-auto for purely self defense purposes. I'm not looking for a pistol, strickly a long gun. High capacity is a must - I would like a weapon compatible with 20 or 30 round pre-ban clips. Also, as my Mother and Sister use the place by themselves often, I want a weapon that has is able to intimidate just by its visual appearance. Currently, I'm thinkng about an AR-15 or an AK-47. I don't know too much about guns in this category, so I am open to any and all suggestions. I'm looking to spend up to $750, but I'd like to spend less if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, why not have all three?

Get a Ruger rifle, a nice Beretta 9mm pistol, and an AK47.
More guns is better than less.

AR-15 (223) would be my choice. You might could get one (post ban) for around $750.00. However, for $750.00 you will be limited to only iron sights. Would need to invest more to equip it with any optics.

    Ruger22, I like your thinking!

3gunner - what about an AK-47 style 12ga? I think Saiga makes one. Detachable mags only hold 5 rounds though.

    My thoughs...

Mossberg 500 12ga for the shotgun and

    Ruger PC-9 or PC-4 as a 9mm or .40 back-up.

You can get both for $750.00 and use Hi-cap mags.

    flat8:

Man I have nothing against any kind of gun... so long as it goes "bang" when it's suppose to. I'm just fond of the AR style rifles thats all. Compact enough to handle inside a residence for protection and accurate to reach out and touch someone.

    My thought of the day....
A handgun will keep'm out of your bedroom....
    A AR-15 will keep'm off your property....
And a scoped rifle will keep'm out of your zip code.

The AK 47 with a 30 round mag is a pretty intimidating sight, and well within the $750 limit. In fact, you can pick up the rifle, a dozen mags, and 1,000 rounds of ammo and still be within the limit.

You've got $750 to spend on this.

You want mother in law, and Sister to be able to use it. The mother in law may think you're a bit nutty if you're teaching her how to use an AK for home defense while up in the woods.

For that price you should be able to get a Remington 1100 COMPETITION MASTER. 20'' bbl, eight round auto loader. If you can't solve a problem with eight rounds of 00 Buck, Mom in law, or sister definetly wouldn't be able to with an AK, cause they would miss. And nothing boost the fear factor like a 12 gauge. There's also much cheaper ways to go but this is a pretty impressive gun. Just my thoughts, I saw it in ask the experts before you posted here, and I did not reply because I am not much of an expert with semi auto rifles.

you can see the video of the 1100 competition master in action, it's popular with the three gun shootout guys, and they have a video link on thier site.

i like the ak's and the ar's . for a camp gun i'd go with an romanian ak(around 400 on gb) .like sharkman said you get a complete kit with lots of ammo and extra mags for under 750 . if somebody steals it your out less money . also the ak has a shorter stock so the women folk will shoulder it better .i have a buddy who has one and it shoots well .

    jmho, wrench .

    look at gb item 14636713

Very good point. The two ladies shoot on the property, but rarely more than my .22. An AK might scare the daylights out of them. On further thought, I have plenty of guns up there now, and I think I might be exploring the "self defense for Mom and Sister "avenue as an excuse to buy ANOTHER gun.[:D] After all, I have always wanted an AK . . . . First preference... 1 Shotgun. Next... 2 Shotguns.

Self defense doesn't happen at 100 yds. Neither does it happen at 100 ft. And most times not even 10 ft.

Shotguns are pointed, not aimed. Shotguns can be loaded so as to be deadly for the intended target but pretty safe for innocents sleeping even behind a sheetrock wall.

Nothing more menacing than a double in my mind. Those two big holes are hugely intimidating. And there's nothing worse than the clang of an A-5 action slamming shut or the shuck of an 870 slamming a round into battery. Any of the three guns should lead a sane person to conclude that he'd be more welcome (less unwelcome) elsewhere.

The best weapon is the one that never needs to be fired. That's the one your intruder has identified long before he's seen it... And the reason I choose the A-5 for duty.

Intruders aren't impressed with a 30 round clip. They don't give a rat's butt about calibre either... And you won't have time to explain. Again, that's why a shotgun. Sight or sound is plenty enough in all but a few instances.

Most anyone can hear the sounds I described above. They cause an almost instinctive reaction. First you freeze, then you begin to feel the hair stand up on the back of your neck. If the muzzle of that scattergun still hasn't come into view, it's then time to leave by the shortest available exit. Nobody in their right mind faces down such a weapon. And if one happens not to be in their right mind... It doesn't matter. The scattergun is well suited to the job at hand.

I'd choose the double for anyone unfamiliar with firearms. Easy to check as to whether loaded or unloaded. Easy for a novice to use. All in all, a much safer weapon for anyone not familiar with firearms. And it's intimidating!

The same advice holds for the four-legged or slithering variety of pests. A load of 8's at 50ft. is deadly to small creatures and most uncomfortable for larger one's. The same load of 8's is as deadly as a slug at 5 feet! Delivery by any one of the three types of scattergun gives equal results.

Remember... Your main goal is never to have to fire your weapon. While a 30 round clip might make you feel better, it won't make the slightest difference until after the firefight begins. On the other hand, the mind game starts immediately when the A-5 or 870 racks a shell into battery. Even if your intruder carries a .45ACP, the advantage goes to you. He'll know that instinctively.

Be safe. Be careful. Know your weapon and your limitations. Hope and pray never to use your gun in anger. Never brandish, nor point your weapon unless you 100% plan to pull the trigger. That's with any weapon!

If you are looking for an intimidation factor + 30rd preban magazine + semi-automatic + a gun your mother and sister can use then I'd personally suggest a preban Tommy Gun with a drum magazine.

I would go with a mean dog and a 12 gauge pump with a large mag.
