Person Who Ripped On Tillman Apologizes

quote:
AMHERST, Mass. -- A University of Massachusetts at Amherst graduate student has apologized to Pat Tillman's family.

Rene Gonzalez wrote a column for the campus paper saying the football player-turned-soldier who died in combat in Afghanistan wasn't a hero -- but rather a "G.I. Joe guy who got what was coming to him."

Gonzalez did not respond to telephone and e-mail messages left Thursday by The Associated Press, but in an e-mail to Boston's WBZ-TV, he apologized to the Tillman family "for all the pain that my article has brought them."

Gonzalez said he was trying to convey that Tillman's celebrity came into play when the former Arizona Cardinals player was labeled a hero.

"I felt that his celebrity had been a factor in American society calling him a 'hero,' and I felt American society had arrived at that conclusion without much thinking, but rather as some sort of patriotic 'knee-jerk' into hero worship," he wrote. "That was my point. I did it [admittedly] in such an insensitive way, that the article was not worth publishing."

UMass president Jack Wilson issued a statement saying the comments in The Daily Collegian on Wednesday were "a disgusting, arrogant and intellectually immature attack on a human being who died in service to his country."

The newspaper's editorial board ran a letter to readers in Thursday's edition saying Gonzalez's views do not reflect The Collegian's opinion.

Still not enough of an apology.[:(!][:(!]

I'm sure his email account was maxed out. I know a number of us fired off some hotmail.

The irony is that Tillman, along with all the other members of the armed forces, are risking their lives, being wounded, and being killed, to defend Gonzalez's right to say what he did. They leave their families and risk their lives defending his right to be a jerk.

I can understand being opposed to the war. I disagree, but I understand having that opinion. But saying what Gonzalez did in print is indefensable. His remarks went beyond criticism of national policy and were personally hurtful and demeaning. His comments were insulting to members of the military in general and to Tillman's family in particular. I think Gonzalez is a tiny man who has benefitted from the sacrifices of others without ever having had to make any of his own. He's also not very bright if he didn't see what the reaction to his comments would be. I'm sure he was shocked at the outrage expressed. It never crossed his mind that most people would not agree with him, or that those in opposition would dare to speak up. Typical liberal thinking.

What disturbs me the most is that his type, those who live sheltered lives with no concept of what it's like in the real world, are the ones now seeking public office and filling the ranks of the news media. Gonzalez needs to get a clue.

With regards to this dirtbag, who will never understand what it means to care about about someone, or something more than your very self, I offer only this...

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Well said Mr. John Stuart Mill

Some people don't get it. Tillman is not being praised as a hero for his actions during battle but for his all actions up to and including his death. He likely would have recieved the sports "hero" status that many of our finest athletes achieve yet Tillman voluntarily gave up a promising career,a fortune, his own personal safety and comfort and ultimately his life, to fight for something he BELIEVED this country needed to do while most in his position would have found a way to keep their distance. That is the kind of hero and example our kids need emulate. He make all of our favorite sports figures look like second stringers. It's one thing to show your support it's another to "give" it.

But saying what Gonzalez did in print is indefensable.

That why we have the 1st Amendment...you can say what or print whatever you want....and no one has to agree with it. The first amendment is just as important as the 2nd and all of the other amendments.

Does anybody really think this scum sucker would've apologized if he hadn't been instructed to do so by the university president? The apology means nothing.

Just because you can say something doesn't mean you should say it. The 1st amendment was meant to protect political speech, not insults. If you are going to argue that Gonzalez has the right to say whatever he wants then you have to support the right of the rest of us to complain about it. If you take the 1st amendment to be absolute, then all speech is protected so it makes no sense to say we can't comment on his comment. I support his right to say what he thinks but I reserve the right to disagree and I also have the right to say that what he said was unthinking and insulting.

A forced apology is not an apology. The little twerp isn't really sorry, the college president made him issue his sorry attempt at an apology.

I'd love to see him go into a bar near any Army base and apologize.

I re-read my post and wonder if it may have been misinterpreted. I hope all understand that I mean people like Gonzales don't get it. Since there have been very few true heros during his lifetime he likely wouldn't recognize one if one kicked him in the *.

This scumbag's apology falls way short of hitting the mark. Granted Tillman is no more a hero than any other active or veteran service member who has served or died in the line of duty. However, Tillman did serve, and his service was honorable what more needs to be said? At least he didn't make traitorous remarks towards his own country.

And that brings up another point about this scumbags weak attempt at an apology to the Tillman family, where is his apology for all the anti American statements he made in his article? I notice the little communist meanie didn't retract any of those![:(!]

The word "meanie" in the above sentence is not mine. The forum replaced the word I used to describe someone born out of wedlock! I wish it had not been changed, but I understand.

I suspect that even in Mass. there are more than a few people willing to smack him. Maybe this is only because he's tired of being smacked. Personally, I'd smack him twice if I saw him now. Once for his first letter and a second time for his poor excuse of an apology.

The best thing about free speech is that some idiots have to pay for it! Just because you have the right to say it doesn't mean that people have to listen or like it. That is our right too.

You know, I hate to get into the middle of this mess, but i want to agree that sports figures are hero worshiped to much. I think it is the medias portrail of sports along with the reinforcement children recieve at home regarding the admiration of someone that can catch a ball or whatever the case may be, that prevents children from developing original thoughts. No one admires frost, or roosevelt, but tiger woods is a god. Whats worse is that large corporations make a killing off of this through endorsements and commercials. So, we're teaching children to admire sports figures and emmulate them, then they grow, earn money, and feed cash into the system. And most of these people i've come into contact with, the sports figures that is, are not the best, or most honorable people. So whats going on? The shepard has turned into the television set, and now you and your children are its flock.

Also, I would like to comment on the derrogatory referance the writer made to minorities joining the military for scholorship money. I realize this is the view foreginers have of our military, poor inner city youths that join because we pay them money and help them with affording schooling. They believe our soldiers are week becasue they are only in the military for the money. We do not conscript citizens for mandatory military service like some nations. They CHOOSE to serve their nation and in return, are not only compensated with wages and salaries, but also educated, and provided the opertunity through government sponsership to further educate themselves in public universities and colleges.

And as far as the whole Tillman thing goes, I'll give you my two cents. What we personally would have done if we were in his shoes is not the case. The guy could have been the biggest bully or gentleman in real life, I don't know. What I do know is he gave up allot of money to serve his nation, what his personal reasons for doing this I don't beleive is important. The guy chose to serve his country and for this reason deserves our utmost respect as do all poeple that CHOSE to. He was apperantly a known sports figure, so the media will capitalize on his death, ever after something to sensationalize.

In my opinion he is no better nor does he deserve anymore respect or attention than any one else who has payed the price of freedom.
