Wednesday morning we found our A/C bit the dust
I ordered a capacitor for it as I could jump start the fan and it would run ( due in today ) but after inspecting it sounds like the compressor has given up also . also how time fly's by its dated 2001 so I am sure its life is over [:(]
for now just dug out my back up window A/C units , using 3 of them and still have a couple as back up for them just in case [:D]
I plan on installing the new capacitor see what happens ( but I know the out come will be bad )

when it went down i called our local heating and a/c guy Monday was early as he could get here so I just decided to jump in and do it , I also called him told him just cancel for now next spring I will give him a call replace with a new one or I may do it and have him just charge it for me

the compressor probably won't start at all without a capacitor but may try to, don't try to hard or you burn it up.

the capacitor arrived this morning installed it ( I did not get zapped by the electric [^]) all is well
I still plan on replacing the a/c next year its 18 years old and I am sure more efficient models have come along

Not to steal the OP, but looking at replacing ours too. Ours is from ?88. Still works, but figure the newer ones should cut operating costs to a fraction.

Looking at a Bryant 2 stage, wanted the 2 stage for better humidity control.

Any experience with a 2 stage AC unit or Bryant?

Two years ago, I had two Rheme A/Cs go out...replaced them with two Trane 16 SEER units and variable speed blowers...the new units are paying for the replacement costs with the savings on my power bills.

Before the new units , my power bills ran close to 400 dollars per month in the summer...my largest bill since installation has been 190 dollars... the variable speed blower may account for part of lowering my costs as well as more efficient units.

    thanks
I am hoping for similar results
my wife has been complaining about electric bill I suspect the old a/c is helping it add up ( ball park 300.00 a month )

I have a 20yr old all in 1 carrier package unit . It still works but I know it is not very efficient,, We do not even use the heat side as we also have a wood heater. I am very seriously considering running one of the Mitsubishi style ductless HVAC systems and just installing myself. They run about the same price wise as a new package unit and very easy to install,,then I can just do away with all of the inefficient ductwork.

the old r-22 systems cool the best, newer systems are rated better but actually use more energy to do the same amount of cooling, just me.

the ductless mini splits average lifespan is about 10 years, I would think the old carrier would still run that much longer if you service it annually.
