Or you can use Allstate, just heard an ad for them claiming to support HBC.
Do you know what an HBC is? I know, ill give some time to think about it.

USAA wouldn't take me --- because I had been enlisted in the Army, not an officer. I wasn't good enough for you then, don't expect my business now.

GEICO sells insurance TO government employees, it is not run BY the government. I left them because they treated me poorly, just like----Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual.

I now have an independent agent. The company moves ALL its customers if they have problems with an insurance company, giving them plenty of clout.

GEICO was formed as Government Employees Insurance Company many many years ago and really was an insurance company for Government Employees. It was similar to USAA without the banking.

In 1962 I tried to join GEICO. I was an E-4 at the time. The lady said I wasn't qualified because I wasn't a "government employee". I explained to her that the U. S. Navy is affiliated with the government. She said for me to call her back after she had time to check on that.

I called her back and she said they do make exceptions for E-5 and above or E-4 with over four years of service. I had less than four years service so I didn't call her again until I was an E-5.

When I call her again as an E-5, she told me I didn't qualify because I wasn't twenty-five years of age or older.

This time I gave up on ever joining GEICO. I think I was more irritated that she didn't tell me all that on the first call than I was about not being qualified. Anyhow, I scratched them from my list of companies to do business with. Now it is no longer a member owned company like USAA, but I'm still not interested in doing business with them.

25 yrs ago both were very selective about who they would take. Now if you have a pulse you are in.

I was taken by USAA on the basis of an honorable Army discharge, after a regular-term enlistment. BTW, they doubled my liability coverage while cutting my rates in half, from what American Family was charging me [:)].

I've been with Geico for over ten years now. No problems. Allstate and Farmers were always at least double, if not triple, on premiums, and my driving record is spotless.

GEICO isn't the same company it was when it was for government employees only. The only thing left of the original GEICO is the name. It was originally set up to operate similar to a co-op. Members owned it. Members were invited to attend annual meetings to elect officers or to sign a proxy to be voted by somebody else. Several years ago they reorganized as a corporation similar to any other publicly owned insurance company. Then a few years after that they sold the company. Now it is functionally the same as State Farm, Travelers or most of the others.

USAA was formed by a group of Army officers because it was hard for them to get insurance overseas. It was set up for Army officer membership only, which wasn't much of an issue at the time because in those days it was rare for enlisted personnel to own cars, especially overseas.

Later they wanted to expand the membership so they opened it up to officers of all services. The next expansion opened it up to all active duty military and then to active duty, former active duty and reserve personnel. Now almost any connection with any military, including Coast Guard is eligible for USAA membership.

I worked in a repair/tire shop that also had a body shop. This was back in the mid 80s. I can still see that State Farm adjuster screwing with the body shop guy. Never have and never will have ANYTHING to do with State Farm.
