How Do You Prep Your House for Vacation?
![Frogdog](https://forums.gunbroker.com/applications/dashboard/design/images/defaulticon.png)
I'm kind of a stress-ball about leaving the house unattended. Just curious how y'all prep when you go on vacation of a week or two (i.e. unplugging everything, turning off water to the house, etc.)

Gas hot water heater? Turn to "pilot". Saves the startup hassles when you come back tired, and don't want to bother.
Gas furnace? Same as above (see oil furnace below, also)
Oil furnace? Trip the red switch..unless you have hot water return radiators. Leave running at a low thermostat setting. It will keep the pumps running, and the pipes charged.
Gas main: Leave on for pilot.
Water main: Leave on for furnace pumps.
Electric main: Leave on for above items.
Turn down the thermostat.
Have neighbour check daily.

If you don't cut off water, at least turn off supply hoses to washer. Unless you have the braid wrapped type, that is your quickest way to lose a house.
Also to the toilets and sinks.
My previous career was as an insurance adjuster. Washers, toilets and sinks seemed to always be culprits.
You can unplug your lamps, toaster and other items that dont need to be plugged in if you want. I generally leave the fridge plugged in. Put valuables out of sight and secure. Lock all windows and doors, have the post office hold your mail...and last but not least...leave a radio or T.V. going with some volume on.
also the news paper ... in addition I have several electrical timers that switch lights on/off at different times durring the evening/night/early morning ... they are closely timed to our patterns when we are home.
? otherwise, you'll find an excuse.

Write a check for $250 to the girl up the street to stay here and watch the dogs/house.
Exactly what we do on the rare occasion that everybody leaves.
