The pit bull was put to sleep on Tuesday morning after police said it attacked and killed a baby boy.

Child Dies After Dog Attack in Burleson

A 3-month-old baby boy died Monday night after being mauled by the family's pit bull.

Burleson police say officers responded to a 911 hang-up call at a home on the 200-block of Linda Drive at about 6:45 p.m. When they arrived, they reported a family disturbance.

After about an hour on the scene, officers were outside of the home talking with family members. One of those family members was holding 3-month-old Rayden Bruce, who had fallen asleep.

The child was taken inside and placed on a bed, where, apparently, the dog attacked.

A few moments later, officers heard screams coming from inside the home followed by a man running outside and carrying the little boy.

The child was rushed to Cook Children's Hospital in critical condition. After arriving at the hospital, the infant was pronounced dead.

The dog was quarantined and euthanized by Burleson Animal Control.

Family members have not spoken publicly, but friends of the family told NBC 5 the dog had not previously shown any sign of aggression toward the child.

NBC 5's Ben Russell and Christina Miralla contributed to this report.

Very sad...I have several dogs...and have had many over a lifetime. All of then have had great dispositions and been very friendly. But they are still dogs and I never felt comfortable with any of them around very small children. I am always cautious and right there when any kids were around my mutts. It is very sad that this happened.

Nearly every dog bite story I've heard includes the line "s/he'd never bitten before".
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Because of all the strangers there it might be the dog felt the need to attack to defend the place. I wonder if the child had never left the house what the outcome might have been.

The first time is always the first time.

With a powerful animal, it is often the last.

    Sad deal all around.

I have lived in Burleson my entire life (time away for the AF). This crap makes me sick. Dogs are not human. They are tools to be used for a purpose. Horses are transportation, cats are rodent control, and dogs are dogs. I am sure these parents are miserable, but they are also stupid beyond breathing air.

When my oldest son was six; I had a springer that got after him. 21 years later, that dog is still in the backyard.

Our dogs are companion animals. They are not "tools," nor do they serve any useful purpose, except that Jake barks at strangers, strange noises, and anything that looks different.

I am not sure about the cats. They offer companionship only when they want to, and since Care Bear, the only hunter in the bunch, got older and quit hunting, the rodent control notion is out.

This story unfolded all day on the radio news. Terrible situation.
If it were me, with the baby gone and the dog down,
I would update my resume and put the house up for sale. [:(]
