Shot myself in the finger today [:(]

With a Nail gun.

We were putting together some walls and had them laying on a trailer, I was nailing a stud from the end and it was twisted so I was holding it with my left hand to twist it straight and when I went to put the bottom nail in the damn gun double shot first going right where I wanted it the second coming under the 2x4 and hitting me right in the side of my left pinky finger, it went right to the bone if not went in to the bone/chipped it a little.

Hurts like a onager, oh and I was being safe or at least as safe as I knew how to use a nail gun "never have used them before really" my hand was about a foot away from the end of the nail gun the nail sailed threw the air to get me.

Anyone know if they make nail guns that are guaranteed not to double shoot? I still have one more wall to build for the reloading shed and don't really want to impale my hand :)

Nope I didn't yell eather heheh just cussed a lot, didn't drop the nail gun even set it on the floor. Hadn't really felt the pain yet once I walked to the house then it started to hurt, but never screamed just a lot of cussing.

stick to the polish nail gun...its the funniest thing ive ever seen, see, you got this stick with a metal head on it...and you gotta hit the nail over and over until its flush with the wood. then you take this weird metal pick and finish hitting the nail in with it. ha! some day they will catch on and the great thing about it, no air or electricity needed! imagine!

That doubling feature seems to be fairly common with some types of nail guns. What makes it really dangerous is that the second nail hits the head of the first nail, then there's no telling which direction it's going to go. I'll either use a power screw driver or a hammer.

I try not to but that thing is a hair trigger like you wouldent believe, I only double it like 1 out of 60.

and as for using the old fasioned hammer thats what I always have done but we got this nail gun in trade for some work we did so when I decided to get into reloading and build a shed to put my reloading stuff in we figured we would give it a go, and overall its real nice a hell of a lot faster than a hammer, its just a we bit dangerous.

And even thow I punctured myself once I still plan to use it for the last wall and definetly for putting on the plywood, its just so much faster.

I do however plan to be even more carefull, and im going to look into seing if they make a safer model nail gun cus it really is nice for this type of work. We did a 16 foot long 8 foot tall wall with 16inch stud spacing done in like 10 minutes if that. Not including cutting that is.

Been there done that, I stuck a spiral lock deck nail through my middle finger about 6 years ago. That ws not bad enough, the nail was through the 2x10 and then through my finger. Yep, pulling my finger off that nail was fun.[:(][:(]

I also have had this wonderfull experience. Nailed right through the web between the thumb and finger. Not too bad going in, screamed like a little girl when I pulled it out. It's always on those end shots or toenailing. The rest I just hold down the trigger and tap the gun where I want the nail...

What brand is it. I used to have a lot of trouble with hitachi doing it. I refused to ever use one of their guns again. Saw to many people get shot by one of them. I like bostich. They are a lot safer.

You can change out the trigger so that it won't double tap...but your productivity will go down quite a bit. I shot a 16 penny (3 1/2") ring shank nail through my thumb about 10 years ago...my thumb looked like a cross. I held it up for a buddy to look at and reached down and yanked the nail out. The boss made me go in and get it X-rayed to make sure I had not hit the bone and I was back at work in about an hour. I soaked it in Kerosene to take the soreness out...it really works![:)]

BTW...nail guns are designed to work that way! It's called bounce nailing, and you can nail off sheathing and stuff a lot quicker by double tapping the nailer. A lot of homeowners will install the single shot trigger for saftey issues. Personally, I would never have a single shot trigger in one of my nail guns. Good luck with the rest of your project.[:)]

Redice, sorry about your experience but you should have this thread killed as soon as possible. The anti's will be launching a campaign to outlaw nail guns. Just think, with a generator and compressor mounted on a trailer, drive-by nailings would become a threat to society.

My thumb got hit from a flying nail from a frameing gun after the wood split at a knot while toenailing it. Believe it or not, but when I was using nail guns every day, I removed the nose safety on my 3 trim guns and brad nailer. I could pinpoint the nail's and brad's like no tomorrow and never would get a double bounce. Just had to let anyone borrowing them know because when you pulled the trigger, they would fire.

Not sure what it is its at the cabin so I can't check I will look into the bostich and a safer trigger

The single shot trigger sounds nice I would rather be a little slower and safer than injured and not working :) I will have to look and see if they make them for this gun.

Oh and someone else was saying to press it down harder, you really can't when your working sideways building walls and even if you are pressing it down it jumps a few inches after each shot you could probably stand on it and it would still jump a little.

Anyhow my finger still works and hasnt swelled up any more so hopefully it heals up fast.

I own every nail gun that Senco ever made. Yes there are ways to avoid the double tap, and it has to do with how you handle the nailer. It is, to pull the trigger before you press the nose (and attached safety trip) to the wood, and let the nail gun bounce away from the wood instead of holding it to the wood. The safety tip just touches the wood and you avoid the double tap.

Watch a real framer and see how he handles the gun.

Also watch a framer nail off sheeting and you will see the same technique.

    Your mileage may vary.

can double tap that way as well, less often but it happens my dad did it a few times, and its a bit harder to be accurate that way, not to mention hold the board at the same time.

That hurts,,,,ok I have to ask did you to the ER and have you had a tetnus shot. If you hit the bone you need to get checked out and watch for a infection to the bone.

Had a guy nail his finger to the wood came in with the wood and the finger attached that was a moment

Nope didn't do eather and don't plan to unless it starts doing something funny, i cleaned it right after and the nail was brand new no rust. Its not the first time I have been poked with a nail eather I once put a 16 penny threw my foot by stepping on a board with one in it when i was a kid that really smarted heheh.

It didn't swell any to speak of and is just sore now so I think it will be fine.

you bet my machine takes 3-- 3,000 count rolls total cap. of 9,000 nails, we can shoot them up in about an hour give or take [:D], each 3,000 count roll feeds into a N80 Bostich gun
