My wife, BJ, suffered pancreatitis attacks for over 25 years. Gastroenterologists said surgery was too dangerous until attacks became unbearable. The risk of dying in surgery was 30-50% at that time. Two years ago last August the tumor on pancreas had grown to 9.5 CM(softball size). Drs said we could wait no longer but only two hospitals in the South were recommended, Emory Univ and UAB at Birmingham. We chose Emory because our daughter lived 25 miles from there. The surgeon there told us his mortality rate was only 4-6%. He had just come down to Emory from Mayo Clinic to do the pancreatic surgery.(Whipple surgery). She came thru OK and had 12 day stay in hosp. They said to expect 2 year recovery period.
Last week she had another attack. She had a CAT scan this AM in Columbus Ga. Hope to get results in couple of days
Keep fingers crossed and keep her in your prayers.
