THE U.S. RE-ACTIVATES THE DRAFT
GETTING READY FOR WORLD WAR VII
By: Jim Moore
Published in the February 24, 2004 issue of Ether Zone.

The way the Bush administration is attacking one nation after another --
on their way to global domination---the world wars are starting to pile
up.

But wars, one after another, is not the administration's problem. Their
problem is, we're running out of soldiers to fight these wars.

I mean, you can only suffer so many casualties, and then you have to
supply more hot bodies. Or as the field commanders euphemistically call
it, new blood.

And that is what the administration is about to do. Or haven't you heard?

The hard facts about re-activating the draft came to my attention via
Adam Stutz, a reporter for Project Censored.

This is a media research group that tracks all the meaningful news in
independent publications and reports stories that have been overlooked,
under-reported, or self-censored by the nation's major news networks.

The mission of Project Censored is to educate the public about the role
of independent journalism in a democratic society, and give people the
"News That Didn't Make the News."

This is news that qualifies, and the headline says it all: "U.S.
Preparing for Military Draft in Spring 2005." The American public, of
course, may not read about this until it actually happens. But there's no
reason why you shouldn't be made privy to it earlier ---especially if you
have boys or girls of "military" age.

So here it is.

The current agenda of the U.S. federal government, says the report, is to
reinstate the draft in order to staff up for a protracted war on
terrorism. Twin bills (S 89 and HR 163) are already pending in the House
and Senate. But here's the sneaky part: the whole thing is timed so the
draft can begin as early as Spring 2005, which, conveniently, would be
just after the 2004 presidential election!

Other plans for the draft have also been kept low key, but we do know
this: young people won't be able to use "higher education" as a shelter,
it won't exclude women, and a quick getaway to Canada is no longer an
option, thanks to the "Smart Border Declaration" which can be used to
keep "draft-dodgers" IN. (Apparently never discussed was using the same
legal technique on our southern border to keep illegal aliens OUT.)

I don't know who is responsible for planning this fast shuffle on the
American public, but if I ever run for office I know this, I'll want that
slick sonofaonager on MY team.

Additional soldiers are naturally going to cost the government more
money. No problem. $28 million has already been added to the 2004
Selective Service System, and the report of activation must be on the
president's desk by March 31, 2005.

Places to register the new young, potential soldiers will also be needed,
and that too is already a done deal. The Pentagon is planning to have
10,350 draft boards (you old soldiers remember those), and 11,070 appeals
boards nationwide.

How, you may wonder, did this draft business suddenly get so imperative?
You can thank Rumsted the Terrible for that. When he told Congress and
military experts that we were in for a "long hard slog" in Iraq and
Afghanistan (for starters), it quickly became evident that the U.S. was
left with no option but to re-activate the draft.

Although the draft (conscription is a nicer word) was established in the
Civil War, and used again in World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the
Vietnam conflict, the draft was finally abolished in 1973 in favor of an
all-volunteer army. Which means we haven't needed to press our young men
and woman into military service for over 30 years.

This has apparently made the war-hungry bunch in this administration a
bit nervous -- Oh my God, thirty years without a war! How can that be?
Sound the alarm! Pass the ammunition! Kill the terrorists! Conquer the
world! How do we do that?

Aha! Re-activate the draft!

Just thought you would like to know what's being discussed these days in
the men's room at the Pentagon.
