Real war heroes or urban legend

Got an email today saying Lee Marvin, a Marine PFC is buried next to generals in Arlington. In WW2,he captured or held a difficult position halfway up Mt Surabachi, got shot in the * and won the Navy Cross.
The late gentle Mr Rogers was a well tatooed Navy Seal, expert in hand to hand combat with 25 confirmed kills in Vietnam.

quote:Lee Marvin did enlist in the U.S. Marines, saw action as Private First Class in the Pacific during World War II, and was wounded (in the buttocks) by fire which severed his sciatic nerve. However, this injury occurred during the battle for Saipan in June 1944, not the battle for Iwo Jima, which took place several months later, in February 1945. (Marvin also did receive a Purple Heart, and he is indeed buried at Arlington National Cemetery.)

The only thing right (above) is that Marvin got shot in the butt. He is buried next to Joe Louis; no Iwo Jima; no Navy Cross.

For the life of me I can never understand why some people go to such lengths to create these stories when there are real living heros still among us today. At last weekends Garand Collectors Association annual meeting in Reno the key note speaker was Congressional Medal of Honor winner Walter D. Elers of Buena Park, CA (about 20 minutes drive from where I live). Mr. Ehlers is the last survivng CMH receipiant from D-Day. Now 83 years of age he still gives an inspiring speech of patriotisim, duty, and love of ones country. I had never seen an actual Congressional Medal of Honor winner before and it was an incredible experience to be in the presence of an actual hero and listen to him describe modestly that what he did nearly 60 years ago was of little importence in the "big picture". Quite a man.

    So is Joe Louis.

Too bad Marvin didn't get lost driving a truck before getting shot; coulda got a Bronze Star to go with that Purple Heart.

As for Mister Rogers, that's been debunked big time. The guy was doing a television show for kids during the Vietnam War.
