Ok i have a 20 pager due at the begining of may. With the paper ill only have 2 finals and i dont have to do any reading for this class after the midterm. Its all up to me about what to do it on. I can do it on anything that deals with U.S history from 1800 to 1850. Anyone got any good ideas, Im thinking maybe somthing with mountain men Louis and Clark or gun development, good topics? any suggestions will be appreciated

Do it on Lewis and Clark and I can give you a little help on the woman they took as a guide with Charbonneau. They call her Sakajawea and claim she was shoshone. The locals here claim she was not shoshone as she returned to live here after the trip.

It should be Sacagawea. This is the way Amy Mossett (ND state specialist on the subject) thinks it should be spelled. That is the way federal agencies spell it. The State spells it Sakakawea. Wyoming spells it Sacajawea, for the Shoshone word meaning, "Boat Launcher." If spelled the way it really sounds, it would be more like Tsagagawea, which you know means "Bird Woman" in Hidatsa. "Tsagaga" is Bird and "wea" is woman.

I'd investigate why lead ball ammo developed into the caliber that was used, and how cast iron barrels were forged in this period.

Do it on the Lousiania Purchase! If you really want a subject that is not usually covered much try doing it on the Black Hawk War! Many future presidents fought in it including old Abe and Jefferson Davis! With that time frame, there are endless posibilities! Relocation of many of the Eastern Woodland Indian tribes, the Trail of Tears, War of Texas Freedom, Westward expansion, War of 1812, and many others. Just some suggestions. I did my senior college thesis in History on the Lousiania Purchase and the pure luck involved as to the aquistion of the land. Many do not know that if it had not been for a former slave in Haiti, we probably would have never have gotten the chance to buy it from France!

Do it on the developement of the Colt Walker pistol. This firearm was designed with the input of a cavalry officer/ Texas Ranger who was training troops to lead into the war with Mexico

wipala mentioned part of topic I think would work. Little has been written on the role of the Texas Rangers and the use of the Colt Walker in the Mexican-American war. The Rangers were apparently a real pain for the regulars but were essential to the war.

Remember the Alamo!! Of course it's not PC anymore to mention it. Might hurt someones' feelings. But, it was an important time in Texas history...1836.
