semi auto 30-06

I've been thinking about getting a Remington 7400,740, or 742 in 30/06. What kind of accuracy could I expect out of one compared to a bolt action in the same caliber? Any input would be appreciated.

They are accurate enough for hunting. Dependability is another thing altogether.

I think you would be better off to get a Browning BAR in -06. More money but a nicer, more reliable, better built, accurate gun.

I use my Garand for hunting:)

I don't think you can get 10rd mags for the BAR like you can for the Remingtons though.

Sure you can. I can only get 20 round mags for my BAR. Heavy though, about 13 lbs without the bipod. Lot of firepower!

Most states are limited to 5 round capacity for guns with detachable mags for deer hunting aren't they?

When using my Garand for deer I have to use a 5 round.

Lever actions can get away with a bunch of bullets for deer as the mag is not detachable.

bmbuzlr: p3skyking is refering to a milatary BAR, not the commercial sporting BAR made by Browning.

The military only had 20 round mags.

And yes, the commercial BAR would be a good choice in 3006.

For accuracy and reliablity the Browning out shines the Remington hands down and is the perfered choice for people who like to use an autoloading rifle for hunting. Nearly all of the current Remington 10 round magazines are of far lesser quality than the so called Colyer Clip which was avialble years ago. The Remington rifles are okay for the average once a year deer hunter, but the Browning is the better choice.

I've had the Remington's, and the Browning BAR is a better gun.

I've never heard of a colyer, but I saw some in Cabelas made by Triple K that are metal instead of the plastic ones.

Of course, if you should decide to go vintage, I just happen to have a nice 80's Rem 742 carbine in .30-06 that's gotta go... [;)][:0][8D]

The 742 was in my original post, so I'm listening. How much?

    What's the difference between the 7400, 740, and 742?

The 742 is probably the carbine length of the 740. These were made until the early 80s when the gun was redesigned and replaced by the designation 7400.

The 740 was originally designed for the .30-06, then began to be chambered for higher pressure rounds like the .270, which Remington found caused the bolt to tear up the insides pretty good. Hence the redesign and model number change. Had they stuck with the original .30-06, the old design might have been sufficient.

You'd have to ask further questions by e-mail as there are no deals allowed on the forum, only in the auctions.

Get the new semi auto Benelli rifle in .300 Winchester mag.[:)] They make it in 30.06 too. I hear they are accurate, but a bolt might be a little more accurate.
