geesh. retirement is so boring. i hate cutting grass and planting flowers. i hate being on the sidelines when the big game is being played. my friends are coming back with some great stories. and all this time i thought they were doing heating and air conditioning work. i was just given a long shot chance to,'CRACK......whummph' or 'pop pop - pop pop.' if you know what i mean. put it like this...ive gained 20 lbs, my eyes arent as good as they use to be, my hearing is down in my right ear, my dad is ill, and i got a wife and family to care for. its like in order to be qualified for this tour, you have to be a gambler. would you put it all on the line? some people gamble because they are good at it. some do it because they are serving. but to leave the safety of homeplate...to whip some rag soup with a pinch of 7.62, whew. help me out here.......i gotta give an answer to the scout. a good poker player knows when to walk away from the table. should i count my chips and call it a night, or dance another dance?[?]

If you want to dance, DANCE. Hopefully the familly will understand
    your commitment.

I wouldn't go over there just to have some stories to tell or to relive and old feeling or make some dream come true. Sounds like your family needs you more than Iraq needs you. If you want a feeling of serving your country, why dont you become a volunteer or paid firefighter or a reserve or paid cop? You get to have the rush, but are still able to take care of your family. A good measure of a man is how happy his family is!

Or you could run for public office.
We need some good people in office.
I am running for our County Commission this Election [:D]

You have a bad case of "Looking back", a common affliction with those trying to fit into a new lifestyle....didn't work for Michael Jordan, Mohamad Ali, Jimmy Johnson, or Phil Donahue. Old Chinese proverb..."Those that look back never go forward". [;)]

Probably several folks in the various forums would like the opportunity to regain our lost youth... If you can get in shape, mentally, physically, and spiritually; have the burning desire to do it again; and your family (particularily the wife) is supportive; then do do it with God speed and traveling mercies....

That's the dirty bleening truth. Iraq isn't some weekend outdoor excursion. People are dying over there.

Whether you are 21 or 41, the Iraq war is not a cause worth dying for, and it is not a cause worth killing for.

I'm reminded of the WWI veteran who attempted to re-enlist on September 13, 2001. I can relate to why you are considering it. You are the only one who can decide if the sacrifice of time away from your family is worth it. It wouldn't be for me.

Leave the bullsnot idea at home that you are " Making the world safe for democracy"....Democracy being every bit as evil as Communism..

and go do it,if the will lies within you.

Try to remember..if you have never been...it ain't how they write about it.

big difference between looking back, being idle, and wanting to continue on the avenue of ones expertise. my skills havent diminished, they are still there. most people go for the money reward. the thought of wasting talent is my concern. im drawn by some call to duty, but my tour is over. fyi..it was 22 years ACTDU and its not like i havent been in harms way before. i was trained to survive. my rekindled interest is caused by friends who come back telling me about being back in the saddle only as a civilian. looking back is an 'ah...those were the days' affair. but, looking at your uniforms and gear with dust on them in the closet, then having someone call you and ask you if you still have your gear and can you still use it, is a compliment. if i was a jerk off the streets with no training where my life depended on training received by some gs-1, well yeah, that would be stupid...but guys, 22 years in airops in specops, its not like i dont know ops. as far as asking advice, well, ya gotta start somewhere and i actually thought this would be a good thread for any others considering going. your inputs may help others more than me. it beats cheap blond jokes on a gun website..now doesnt it? anyway, my names in the hat. if they need me, theyll get me. odds are, the younger and better eyes will get it before me. amazing what just 5 years will do to your eyesight when you get older. i was surprised how fast i lost it. anyway...keep it coming guys. its a man thing. i can take it.

Watch a show on the history channel called "SAS" - "Are you tough enough?"
I guarentte that you will forget all about going 'in country'!!

It is about civillians trying out the SAS selection course! And no, there is no prise at the end except for respect of the instructors!

If I can't spell, so what!

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

[8D]Yo bobski, the past is part of Our future, my last Duty was on the USS PARCHE SSN 683, after 33 years as a Nuke and thats all I can safely say ,I love the US Navy and I think you do to, they did me OK,I think you'll agree knowing what little I want to know about you and I hope you'll feel the same about me. I was with "Ocean Engineering" from 1981 thru 1993 when I Officially retired. As a LTCDR certified on (4) Nuke subs I think you know which ones-we can't say , but Readers Digest can, I -enough![xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(]

On your mark-get set- go away!!

    Got it..
meant no disrespect.Knew nothing of your skills or abilities.

There are always those prefering to walk in the rough..and skill tends to keep one alive...over youth and headyness...

There are those for whom watching from afar..cannot possibly feed the spirit. You have the age and wisdom to know what is deep inside yourself..and it is obvious that mowing the grass is not where you are at..at this moment....

Bobski, I myself have considered going. I come from a family that has served my grandfather in the korean war , my father in vietnam. Uncles ect. I have 4 kids and a wife so i think i made the right choice. Like others said it aint worth it.

    Thomas Jefferson, of Virginia:
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

Get Some DWS; War is a young man's game, though I was back in it just two nights ago, fortunately in my dreams I'm not actually endangering anyone by being less able to perform the job than a 19 yo.

Bobski, there are supplements you can take to help your eyesight, Eyebright being one of them. Good Luck, God Speed, and pop a few for me too.
