Talking with the permit dude.Deputy Sheriff.Got to talking about the pain in the butt it is to drive over there for pistol permits only two at a time. He says he doesn't see why after the first permit check we should have to bother if we have a CCP. And he also said people like me with a clean record that collect guns should be allowed to own ANY gun. Machine guns ? Yep. Baazookas? Yep. Hand held SAMs? Yep. He says he knows that people like me are not a problem as long as I store my collection in such a way as to keep it safe from crooks. He says every honest citizen of the county should be armed all the time so that when the cops need help or aren't there in time they'll be plenty of trained guns around to keep the crooks in line. I told him he needs to run for Sheriff. I'm goona see if he'll give a talk at the schools about it. The principals will think he's gonna say guns are evil since he's a cop.[:D][;)]

So True BDjr. My local and only (100%) gun shop in the county Is owned and run 2 Calif. Hwy Patrol Sargents and the staff is a bunch of retired or soon to retire Leo's. All of them have the same feeling- but Laws are Laws.

But I got to tell ya I have known the owners and the many LEO's that work there part time. It is so funny watching the gang bangers come browsing in the gun shop trying to act cool an tough, not knowing 95% of the guys and gals in there are Cops. [8D][:D]

OTD You would not believe it till ya see it. The gang bangers come in 2 or 3 at a time and try and look cool. They will look at used SKS's and such, wearing colors(Blue in this case) asking stupid questions about Hi Cap magazines and other dumb things that most gun people now are Illegal. I swear the bangers have no clue the guys behind the counter are Cops or retired Cops! You would think they would figure it out. A few Carry in plain site in the shop!

I have met thousands of cops over the years. Only 2 or 3 were jerks, and probably my behavior made them act that way. Nearly all were reasonable people just trying to do a job.

At one time I worked in a shop DIRECTLY across the street from the Va St Police Hq. Stupid is as stupid does. One of the bangers wanted to use his subpoena for aggravated assault as his secondary ID. Would you believe that a bail receipt is a valid secondary.

I would be careful about asking him to speak in public. I too am an LEO (NOT A COP!) Unless spoken by a fellow LEO, to me COP is an offensive term. I too feel the same way about firearms as the deputy you came across, but I have been chastised by my supervisors many times for speaking in a public forum about my views on gun control. They think I'm a lose cannon, and as such I pose a liability to them. Unlike me this officer works for an elected official, if he offends someone the elected Sheriff of the county may call him on the carpet, and make trouble for him. I on the other hand work for the Federal Government, and I have found it very hard at times to be able to express my point of view. Whenever I see an unjust act being imposed upon a legal gun owner I stand up and scream about it. This has caused most around here to stop and think before they act, but it has also caused others to just * off as someone with extremist views.[B)]

I do not mean to be offensive with my use of the term "cop". My friends in that line of work have always refered to themselves as 'cops' so that is the term I am accustomed to using. I will still ask the guy about speaking, but will point out what you have said about possible backlash as a result of his doing so.

Yea I know. At times we LEO's are the biggest offenders of the phrase. I kind of see it the same way I do young black males who call themselves the "N" name all the time. That and the media have abused it so much. If one were to track the history of its use you would find that it is short for the phrase "Copper". Copper came about years ago when criminals would use it to describe a Police Officer, who were a uniform with the big copper buttons on it. It started fairly tame, but has been used more & more lately in a discouraging manner.

    Trinity,
you may have the straight skinny on this...

But I've always heard it came from, "constable on patrol" and originated in England.

Really don't know! Okay, who wants to do the research?

I heard the copper button theory on History Channel. They are usually pretty good on their research.

I have always understood it to stand for Constable on patrol. COP for short. We had a towne COP where I grew up. Quite a man. He never had any problems with the term. But then again maybe Law enforcement officers are above such things as patroling.

Not all LEO's are bad. [:o)]
We got some good ones on this site, which have greatly improved my respect for most LEO's.

I mentioned this on another thread but I talked to an Air Marshal the other day. He mentioned that starting salary is $60k a year. That's almost double what I make. Next time I see him, gonna ask him to get me an application.

I had three uncles that were cops and I adored them I was always to scared of my dad to tell them their older brother was a child molester and I just assumed that they would not believe me any sooner than any one else.
eventualy my youngets uncle went back to schooland just retired from the bench in Calif.
I know most peace officers see people at their worst ,domestic abuse or drunkeness, stupid teens and immature people trying to prove they are something they are not or most people dont want to be,
In the 60's when it became popular for people to say pig I was hurt and afraid for my and their safety.
I feel very angry if parents tell their kids be good or the cpos will come get you .
I have met may officers and most were men who realy want to live in a better world and just wanted to get in a job where they can help others ,I dont think they really bargain for being called names or having to scrape dead bodies off highways.I have met a few that have a complex and a need for control, I give them a wide berth and if they are really out there I am not adverse to talking to the sherrif

[came from england , was the shire from the rief] was appointed so all matters didnt have to be brought befor the king and latter appointed men to patrol the streets of england to call .all is well....unfortunatly most were head crackers and enjoyed thier job.

I have even written articles for the paper on the missactions or inaproprate conduct. I see things and feel the control guyes need to know they are watched and the public needs service not slapdowns.

I like the cops I know and I count them as friends
