which is the better choice?

I'm debating revolvers here.

.44 mag or .500 S&W

short, light, compact or huge, heavy, and accurate

Taurus, S&W, or Ruger

Would be for back-up hunting gun, defense, target shooting (fun, not competition)

What does everyone think? Thanks.

.44 Mag is going to be less expensive and more versatile in terms of ammo. I haven't shot a .500 S&W yet, but I hear they pack a lot of recoil. I would recommend a 6 inch S&W 629.

    Remember Ruby Ridge.

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

What about .480 Ruger? If you want the most powerful,Magnum Research offers their BFR in .45-70 and .444 Marlin.

I'd go with the 629. But then again, I'm not rich, I'm not he-man enough to be wanting to tote around a revolver that weighs as much as my rifle, and I'm comfortable with my bathtub-size.

The 500 in the 8-3/8" barrel is now my favorite gun. If you are anywhere near the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, I'll be glad to let you try mine out.[;)]

Now I've gotta make a trip down there. Wait a minute, I'll be shooting in Texas in a few months. This could be good[:D]

In Ohio handguns are permitted as a primary arm for hunting, no 'back-ups' or concealed carry permitted while activly engaged in hunting.

Must be .357 caliber or larger, straight-walled cartridges only, 5" minimum barrel length.

For cost of ammo and physical abuse suffered, I would go with the 44. You can afford and tolerate additional practice to develop the skill to hit what you aim at. The 500 S&W can be a sucker's bet for the 'bragging' rights alone. I admit I want one as a toy...it would not be practical for me 'cause I know what I can afford and what recoil I'll tolerate for sufficient practice.

If you are hunting or plinking with this revolver and friends witness your misses...not much bragging there.

For a backup pistol while hunting I would go with a Taurus Titanium Tracker with a 6" bbl. Light, versatile and fun to plink with.
