Need some coffee help and advice

I am currently drinking Seattle's Best #5; it is a very dark rich coffee, I really like it. I drink it black.

I am looking to save a bit on the cost so I am seeking a generic dark roast coffee to save a few bucks.

Any coffee connoisseur's out there that can help???

I haven't found a generic yet, that doesn't taste like army mess hall coffee.
Sorry, but that's all I can offer.

My wife and I really like Seattle's Best #3 brewed in our MoccaMaster, but after that pot is finished we brew several different choices, depending on our individual preferences, in our Keurig!

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

I started drinking HEB store brand coffees, Cafe Ole. Very good for a store brand. I drink medium roasts, so I'm not sure about their dark roasts.

Mayorga Caf? Cubana at Costco. It's a dark roast.
I use to drink only Starbucks.
    This is better and cheaper.
Usually about $8 to $9 a pound, sometimes on sale cheaper.

    Oh yeah, it's whole bean.[8D]

8 o clock coffee or community coffee breakfast blend is what I go with.

They also have a San Francisco kind that's a good, dark, French Roast; lotsa body, good first sip, lingers a tad, really cheap!
I only have 1 cup of coffee anymore, but it's gotta be black, strong, & at least 20 oz.!

I've heard that you should try to stay with Arabica beans if possible, a darker roast and maybe coarser grind, and if you are using a drip coffee maker, add more coffee but pull the pot before the last cup comes through.

Pull that last cup and compare it with the first cups that came through.

We have a place in Arivaca AZ that has great coffee, Arabica beens.

120 mile round trip to get a cup of joe. I make the trip on nice weekends on the motorcycle. coffee_drinking_smileys.gif

I found it's worth the money for a good cupa
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

Roast your own and you can buy whatever you like and roast it to whatever degree of roast suits you. I buy top shelf green coffee for 6 to 7 bucks a pound delivered and roast it to my particular tastes (lightly roasted to maximize the specific flavors of the coffee rather than the charcoal that is Starbuck's). Not hard to do and an easy way to save a few bucks on great coffee.

Sounds like the true coffee conosuer's have spoken.

I'm just a simple man and enjoy simple things.

For me Maxwell House original roast brewed in an old percolator on the stovetop does me good.

I tried a cup of Starbucks once and thought it would be OK if you were to add about a gallon of hot water to it.

The best for me when out and about is from McDonalds.

We have been drinking Costco Kirkland Dark Roast Supreme Bean for years. Best coffee we have had, better than what most restarants serve.

Only costs 8.99 for three pounds at Costco.

    Buy your own beans

    Grind your own beans

If you can find one used - old - vintage get a coffee maker with a "percolator"

If no pre-owned older model available aquire a new one (they are making them again - pricey)

Use "good" water (a Brita filter or similar alt brand analog) that has been purified and filtered

Or use "good" bottled water (Fiji - Dasani - anything high end or in a glass bottle) that has less impurities

When you source your own beans you must sort them

Get a wide shallow light color (white is best) bowl or vessel

Pour your beans in the vessel and sort (a qc / qa activity)

You are looking for "quakers" - beans that are lighter or darker in color - remove these beans and discard (you can save these for emergency use or to use for guests or family who don't know better)

In addition any bean that looks "off" (one of these beans is not like the others - one of these beans doesn't belong) shape or texture or size or smell or appearance (organoleptic critical control point)

Not all filters are equal - if available or adaptable use "good" filters

I am uncertain but try looking up America's test kitchen coffee related episodes - they will enlighten and educate you

Explore different beans - from different price points

Some cheap beans may prove surprisingly good - or will suit your palate

Blending and mixing beans is a more advanced technique but is acceptable

Keep records - a log of activity (like reloading data)

Decent coffee makers must have consistent temperature control - in a specific narrow range

And while it may not be your thing also do iced coffee taste comparisons - as a secondary control method this may reveal deficiencies

And consider what you are putting into your coffee

Good flavored syrups (peppermint for example) is allowed

    Cane sugar is highly recommend

    Real cinnamon sticks are recommended

And consider what you are putting your coffee into

This will start you on the right path - find your inner batista

    Mike

    Wow Mike,
If I did all of that I would have to sell my guns and airplane and stop flying just to find the time; my chickens need me too. [;)] [:)][:D]

I am just looking to save some coin on a cupa Joe. I drink it black, in the morning with breakfast and occasionally in the evening with some foo-foo hazelnut coffe creamer the GF has in the fridge.

I am too busy sorting brass from my last range session to sort coffee beans. I really did not realize how insane coffee prices have gotten. Maybe its time to switch to tea. [:0]

Kirkland dark roast or Walmart's Great Value dark roast. Don't know who makes the Kirkland store brand, but Yuban makes the Great Value for Walmart.
