Yesterday, tried to defrag/scandisk and it just looped on me. Found 2 files without names, just a ~ for the name. Deleted them and was able to defrag/scandisk. Today, same thing; found 1 ~; can't find the other. What's going on??? Where are these files coming from? HELP!!!!!!![xx(]

I don't have any specific advice I'm afraid, as this doesn't ring any specific bell.

However, in your place, I would run ad-aware and any other anti-spyware programs I had, as well as, updating and running my virus software.

It has been my experience that strange files, or odd registry entries, are usually the work of programs which have been installed without your consent, or are left-over from old software. The fact that they re-appeared makes me lean toward the first explanation.

Since I can't see it, I can only make a couple suggestions. First, walk away for a couple hours after starting scandisk, since it is a long slow process and it is possible to mistake working for hanging or looping.

You might want to make a backup image of your HD files just in case, with something like Norton Ghost, while you can. There is an outside chance it could be a failing HD cluster or "bad block" -- but it sounds just as likely it could be merely a simple error or conflict. I'm going to assume you have already run the latest virus software.

Some versions of Windows scandisk don't get along well with some aftermarket utils like those optimization utilities packaged with Norton. The Norton group does a good job of cleaning up errors, and if they're installed, should be used instead of the Windows utils.

Scandisk isn't the only system optimizer that I would run in this situation. Norton and other products include a good disk doctor that cross checks directory structure, partitions, boots, etc., and a win doctor that checks the registry for outdated entries & file links. If your defrag program hangs, it could be the result of a minor system tree error that disk doctor could repair first. In fact, my Norton utilities generally insist on running disk doctor before doing a full defrag. Then it can run on an error-free system structure. It does often find a minor error of some kind, and repairs it.
