bees in the wall

Need some help with a little problem.

The light fixture outside my front door went bad, and I precrastinated about replacing it. In the meantime bees have used the 3/4" by 2" slot in the siding to enter and take up residence in the wall.

How to get them out or kill them without driving them into the house?

Hate to kill them but I can't leave them where they are. They don't bother me, but they are flying around the front door all day, and it is only a matter of time until they mistakenly view me (or worse yet a guest) as a threat and attack. That close to the new hive, there are sure to be enough to do some damage.

Raid, or one of the similar company's, makes a wasp/hornet spray that is a foam. It sticks in place to kill the ones that are out flying missions for the hive.

The other thing I have seen is to put a Shop-Vac hose next to the hole and keep it running all the time. I have seen this 3 or 4 times, I don't know how well it works. It's kind of annoying to hear the vac running all the time is the down side.

    Good luck.

I've had a similar problem around the farm
    a couple of times.Luckily,there is a beekeeper
(I can't remember the official name)in the area
who gladly comes to people's rescue.Trying to get
rid of them yourself can be impossible, not to
mention dangerous!Check the yellow pages,or ask
around(feed store would be the best bet). One thing
is for sure, there are a whole lot more bees there
than you think.Last time he helped me out,the hive
was under a 8'x8' cage I have in the back yard
(wood floor). We noticed them coming in and out for
    a couple of weeks.They weren't bothering anything
until we came home and the dog(tied nearby)was all stungup.
He estimated 50,000 bees were removed!!
Whatever you do,DON"T PI$$ THEM OFF!!!

I thought about simply spraying ito the hole in the wall after dark when they are all back in there. But I don't know for sure where they are, and if they are close enought to the hole to be reached that way. I also don't want to drive them to find a way into the house itself, which I suspect they could do.

Just did a search for "Indiana beekeepers" and found a guy on the board of the state associationlive just a few miles down the road. I have left him a message.

In the meantime, any advice would still be greatly appreciated, as I don't know if these folks can or will help.

Advice,LEAVE THEM ALONE until you hear from the
    beekeeper!Meanwhile,double your fire insurance
and get all your guns(and ammo) to a safe place.

ZURICH (Reuters) - A man who tried to fight bothersome wasps with insect spray and a cigarette lighter burned down his apartment and two neighboring flats, Swiss police say.
A police spokesman said Tuesday the man used a whole can of insect spray on a wasp nest underneath an overhanging roof outside his apartment.

When he tried to fend off the angry wasps with his lighter, the fumes ignited and set the flats ablaze.

No one in the apartment block was hurt, but the blaze caused more than $350,000 in damage.

    Don't let this be you.

I am leaving them alone, believe me.

But Bobby, why increase the fire insurance? I'm not going to do anything like the Swiss guy.

If they are European honey bees, the can do the job by it may require a little wall modification so he can get to the queen. If they are something else, like carpenter bees or paperwasps, he will not be able to collect them and you will likely need to resort to insecticides. If you get stung, get away quickly and use the back door. Wash the sting and treat. When they sting they also spray you with a persistent pheromone that says "Sting Here" to others of the hive.

I had a hive in the wall of a storage shed. Honeybees were coming and going from a hole in the wall. I simply sprinkled some Orthene ant powder around the hole. In about 2 days, no more bees.

Carpenter bees drill holes in the wood. They live in there. If you can get to the holes, use any insecticide. Where the holes are hard to reach, I have simply watched them coming and going and then hit individual bees with wasp & hornet spray. They are also fun to shoot with a BB gun.

HEHE, me too! My grandmother had a huge swarm hanging off her mulberry tree. Me and my cousin would drop about 10 BB's down the barrel and fire at the swarm and watch about 100 bees drop each shot. Lotsa fun until the bees see you[:0]

My dad was a beekeeper about 35 years ago.He always used cyanide to kill bees that were invading houses and such. This was dangerous to use and now is no longer avaliable. We would always watch him to make sure he didn`t go down with the bees. Today I use 7 dust to take care of ground nesting bees. They track it in and within a few days they are all dead.

You can still buy potassium cyanide, I have a pound in the garage. Almost no one would have a use for it and it is very toxic to say the least. It is not a good chemical to put into walls!

I enlarged the entrance/exit to3/4" and emptied a can of Hornet and Wasp spray into the stud space. I then immediately caulked the opening closed. Never saw another one,and had no odor in the house. I did it on a cool night when there was no activity-Bob

My first thought was to just tell my Ex she could sell them for a dollar each , and she would have caught'em one by one,but I didn't want her around that long!!
