Check out this 1st model 1873 Winchester. the seller started at one cent with no reserve, Nice right?
Well in his ad he claims the tang sight is worth 12 grand all by itself. [:0]
So far the rifle has hit somewhere north of 4500 so I think he has taken a huge gamble. What do you think?

it will almost invariably sell for what it is worth. whether what it is actually worth and what the seller or some book thinks its worth is a totally separate conversation. the free market will append and appropriate price at the end of the auction.

How can a rear peep sight be worth 12 grand? is it made out of unobtainium?

The real question is: How do I go about drilling and tapping it for a scope mount?

For 12 grand I would think the cabin is included.
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

I am no expert on sights, most likely the seller just accidently put too many zeros into the value.

That is a very nice condition First Model 1873, and it is absolutely original[^].

It is my belief that the seller accidently typed one too many zeros concerning the value of the Lyman No. 1 first variation tang sight. It could easily be worth as much as $1,200, and it is perfectly legitimate on that rifle.

I am quite impressed by the quality and sheer number of pictures that the seller provided... It would be nice if all sellers followed his example.

As for the value, that rifle could very easily hit the $9,500+ mark, and at a live (well attended) auction, it could go a fair bit higher. Simply put, it is extremely difficult to find any First Model 1873 Sporting Rifle in that level of condition, and totally unmessed with. I did not see even one buggered screw head on it.

If any of you are interested in bidding on that rifle, please let me know via a PM. Otherwise, I have a couple of fellow WACA members that will bid on this once I point them towards it.

Isn't that like throwing in the towel, meaning to quit?

However putting you name in the hat, has a different meaning altogether.

Perhaps I am over thinking this, or someone isn't thinking at all.

Comes from the early days of exibition boxing when men from the crowd would take on the traveling champ. A local fighter throws his hat into the ring meaning he has to go in and get it so he might as well fight.
His second throws the towel in the ring meaning he is going in to recover his downed fighter.
Back in the day when hats were really important. (I guess in Texas, they still are)

That Lyman no1 tang sight lists at 300.00 to 600.00 so 12000.00 is a bit optimistic.

That is not your common variety Lyman No. 1 tang sight. It is an extremely early (most likely first production year) sight made before they started putting the patent date on them. Within the group of us that collect such sights, it would sky-rocket past the $600 mark if listed in an auction.

I wonder if he put one too many zeros on it? More like $1200.
