Turkey in Pennsylvania

Turkey Call Magazine came this week, just opened it.
Has a list by state that shows population and harvest records. I was stunned to notice Penn. has 350,000 birds and 48,008 harvested!
Texas 578,512 pop. and 38,181 harvested.
Missouri was 800,000 and only 14,487 harvested...and that's third in line. These are all Eastern birds.
New York 250,000 birds and 12,000 harvest.
Only other state with over 10,000 harvest is Wisconsin with 10,850 out of 320,000.
Now, to be correct, there is no record for Louisiana. [:D] Gotta say it Coonass(and spiny/Dune)you guys don't know what a season is. [;)]

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.<BR>
Our spring hunt starts around the first of April and runs about 5/6 weeks. That's when it's fun!
And we got a lot of turkeys-my yard is infested with them. It is unusual to NOT see a turkey on my property at any hour of the day.

I hope you are doing well...IL harvested 14,631 of the wiley critters based on IL DNR preliminary results they published last May. Fortunately, I accounted for 2 of them [:D]

I have always passed on Turkeys until last year.
I hunt out around Rocksprings,Texas and we are covered in turkey on our lease. I'm talking 20-25 Toms most evenings.
Others hunters finally talked me into takin a couple.
Any good recipes???
I'm now hunting in East Texas and lo and behold the turkey population here is taking off which really surprised me.

Turkeys have been on the increase for the last several years. Remember Pennsylvania is mostly miles and miles of vast timber. Especially in Mckean and Potter County!

WILD TURKEY PRODUCTIVITY (Job 27001 PDF)
Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs) recorded their daily travel distance and the number of wild turkeys seen each day while in the field during the months of June, July, and August 2001 to determine summer turkey population index trends. The statewide index of turkeys seen by WCOs in 2001 (18.2 turkeys seen/1,000 km) was similar to 2000 (18.8 turkeys seen/1,000 km). Although Turkey Management Areas (TMAs) 3 and 6 showed record values of turkeys seen/1,000 km, these increases were not significant. TMA 2 showed a significant decrease in turkeys seen, and represents the second consecutive year of fewer turkeys seen than the record number of 33.1 in 1995. TMA 5 had a significant increase in turkeys seen, closer to the record 26.9 seen in 1999. Daily rain events during the last week of May and first week of June, in many parts of Pennsylvania, may have negatively impacted poult survival during the first peak of hatch. This lower first-nest success, however, may have been offset by increased turkey poult survival during second nestings, which was prompted by dry, warm weather and outstanding food and cover conditions. This speculation is consistent with survey results and field reports of large turkey flocks that included multi-age young, which revealed re-nesting success. Spring harvest densities in TMAs 1A, 1B, 2, 5, 8, and 9B have shown substantial increases since 1995. TMAs 3, 4, and 6 have shown slight increases since 1995. TMAs 7A and 9A have shown stable spring harvest densities since 1995. TMA 7B, where we are studying the causes of a suppressed population, have had variable spring harvest densities. I recommend continuing this survey and spring harvest analysis to provide a basis for monitoring turkey population trends.

Don't know why, just had a flash of Al Bundy with a shotgun...wouldn't that be scary! [;)]
TwoDogs, lot of folks deep fryin' now a days but you've got to have the pot and all. My lady slices the breast and chicken frys it like we do down this way along with cream gravy. If you want it whole, a lot of bar-b-que places will cook it for ya.
Also I am going over to Beaver Valley gun shop in Waterford today to order an Ithaca Turkeyslayer Storm. Ithaca suspended their turkey retro-kit promotion a year ago and I was not able to get one of those.
