Vandalism Brings Call for
Local Police in Wyalusing

By David Keeler

Wayne Vanderpool, owner of Wyalusing's Downtown Auto Center, says a recent rash of burglaries at his business that involved license plates and other items being stolen didn't bother him half as much as when someone stole the front of his Coke machine early Monday morning.

What was special about the soda machine, Vanderpool says, was that it featured an illuminated poster of NASCAR racing legend Dale Earnhardt.

"I've owned this business for five years and didn't have any problems with theft until recently," Vanderpool says. Over the last two weeks, however, thieves hit Vanderpool's business three times.

A nearby resident watched Monday at about 2:30 a.m. as an unidentified adult male used a torch to remove the front of the soda machine. The witness was able to provide a general description of the culprit and the truck he was driving.

Vanderpool said the Dale Earnhardt poster is considered valuable by racing fans that collect NASCAR memorabilia. He said it is worth about $3,000.

Now Vanderpool wants Wyalusing Borough to help cut the crime rate by reactivating the local police force.

Wyalusing has been without a local police department since it became snarled in a legal battle with former police chief George Andras about five years ago.

" I didn't like it when they took the other stuff," Vanderpool said. "But when they took the door off the soda machine, it really made me mad."

I think I'm going to volunteer to buy him a Colt Firearms sign to put on the soda machine.....
