Bear encounters

The Oregon State Dept of Fish and Wildlife is advising hikers,
hunters,
fishermen and golfers to take extra precautions and be on the
alert for
bears this summer.
They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little
bells on
their clothing to alert but not startle the bears unexpectedly.
They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an
encounter with a
bear.
People should be able to recognize the presence of bears in an
area by their
droppings:
Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berry residue and
possibly
squirrel fur.
Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them and smell like
pepper
spray.

I have to laugh every time I hear the "bell" recommendation. Most of the bells sold at the junk shops in bear country are a joke. They are the cheap brass "sleigh bell" type and are barely perceivable at more than 10 feet on a calm day. Granted a bears hearing is better than ours but the crunch of rocks and twigs underfoot is as likely to be heard as these crummy little bells. I have encountered people with bells on the trail and heard their footsteps long before the bells.

Pa', I'm looking for one of those Grizzly's. I know a troll who plans to drop one in his tracks with his Jennings .25 ACP. So if you see any droppings that have .25's in it, you'll know he was there![:D]
