Flag Burning (stir stir stir)

I would be the first person in line to deliver a swift kick to the gonads, followed by a knee to the chin if someone burned Old Glory in my presence.

I believe that the fact the government can't lawfully punish someone for burning the flag is the very thing that makes our nation great.

Do you think the government should punish those who disrespect the flag?

If you don't call hanging them by their nads punishment, then no. If they don't like our country, then get the heck out.

Nope...No government involvement. I think punishment should be left up to those who are a bit more patriotic and believe in our freedoms. That would, of course, disqualify our government.

To counter the trend of this thread. No.

Though I always try to respect the flag and would not burn it other than in a proscribed manner, others do have the right to express their 'feelings' in this way. You need not like it but, perhaps unfortunately, they do have the right.

This is just another example of your free as long as you share my opinion on what that freedom is.

There are many rules governing the treatment, use and display of the flag. If it needs to go beyond that then laws with specific punishments need to be enacted by those YOU elected to office.

Well said, Powdersmoke. I'm not interested in burning it, either, and there are a lot more important things for our elected representatives to deal with.

And, aren't there laws against just going up to folks and kicking them in the crotch? Oh, nevermind, the police would be there with clubs anyway.

I believe you mean you would only burn a flag in a prescribed manner. [:D] I have no objection to ceremonial burning of retired, unservicable flags.

Anyone remember after 9/11 when a mob of PLO supporters were burning Old Glory and dancing around when a fellow igniting another flag was engulfed in flames when a gust of wind blew it back on him? [:D]

I've never understood the Touchy-Feely-thing people have about flag burning.

It's a statement or provocation that people have the right to use.
Peoples wishes and rights are sometimes annoying to others.

Some might say that neither Greenland nor Denmark have anything to be proud of - we do.. but we don't mind much, if the flag is burnt as a protest, because that's just the way it is.

When speaking of flags.. I'd like to ask..

Why is it that Saddams statue was to have it's face covered with the american flag?

It was like a blow to the faces of any Iraqui - people began to see it as a provocation and even sign of total control by the US.
Just about any american I've heard comments from on this, thinks it's okay or didn't care.

Personally it makes me very sad deep down inside to see anyone burning a flag of their own or another's country. To me it is a spit in the face of the people not the government.

When I see our flag burning it really strikes a nerve as I see all Americans being direspected especially those who have sacrificed so much to make our home safe, free and secure.

When I signed on as a warrior for America, I took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. For that I was willing to die for.

I was not willing to die for a piece of CLOTH.

Folks, I may be out of touch with some of you, but the ideals of our country, that intangible spirit of America. That is what is worth dying for. A $5. piece of bunting (probably made in China) isn't worth a single hair on a single soldiers head.

Burn the flag? What has been accomplished? America survives, our people survive, and our freedom and ideals survive.

    Just my thoughts.

I'm currently working on a situation where a soldier attempted to burn a UN flag while at a local college sporting event. The sad thing is that the flame from the UN flag also ignited Old Glory standing next to it. When I was first informed that he burned the UN flag I asked, "so when does he get his medal?" Then I was told that it also caused the US Flag to catch fire "Oops, well at least his intentions were good".

No, don't make it illegal, just don't protect them from people who take offense and beat the crap out of them. To me its kinda like someone spitting in your face, its a provocation, deliberate and intended to provoke. So just let them suffer the consequences of their stupidity. Our flag is a symbol, it stands for many things to many different people. To me, it is a symbol that represents the sacrifices of our fathers and grandfathers. Men who fought and died to insure our nation remain free. Men who sacrificed everything to secure our country for future generations. It represents ideals, it represents courage, truth, justice and honor. That is what our flag symbolizes to me. So to me, for someone to deliberately desicrate our flag is a cowardly way for chicken fooey socialist scumbags to insult the very men who sacrificed so that they would have the right disrespect them. Ironic isn't it. I say let them do it, let them find the biggest flag they can carry and burn baby burn but don't protect them when some father who lost his son or some son who lost his father decides to wrap them in that flag while its still burning.

I have put my life on the line to defend the right to burn the flag. I do nt believe that burning the flag of the United States of America is a good thing. I do not believe that disrespect is a criminal act. my 2 cents [8D]

Last summer not to far from where I live, some kid decided he was bored so what does he do? Puts a dress on, wraps a flag around his shoulders and proceeds to the local 7-11. When the crowd was big enough he sprayed the flag in lighter fluid and lit er up. Needless to say after the ten minute beating he took {cops watched the whole thing} I bet it's the last time he wears a dress in town... or burns a flag [:D]

I thought retired flags were to be buried?

As for burning, I am not a fan of flag burning so far, but must champion the rights of those who feel they must. If the jingoists curb the rights of some, then in time the rights of all will fall.

If you feel you must burn an American flag as a sign of protest or disrespect - go ahead, but wrap yourself up in it first.

last year back when the war started.in portland oregon there was an anti war rally .ralliest's started to light a flag on fire ,a vietnam vet jumped from out of the crowd and grabbed the flag and took off running.the crowd chased after him and finally caught up w/ him a few blocks down the street where the started beating the vet.the vet never lost hold of the flag.the beating stopped when a citizen with a ccw permit got infront of the vet and pulled his gun on the crowd.they protesters got off of the man and backed away from them.the man with the ccw saved the vietnam vet's life.the vet never lost hold of the flag.and no charges were filled against the man with the ccw who pulled the gun to save the vet. but charges were filled against protesters who were beating the man.i read about this in the oregonian last year.

if i saw that i would have done the same as the man with the ccw.
