Is there a good source (magazines, books) of do it your self home improvement projects. Like roofing, siding, insulation, finishing a basement, fenceing the backyard etc. My Sister just bought a house we want to see if we can do some fixing up correctly.

Thanks:

there are some things that when you have to ask, ie : roofing, siding, ect. its best to find someone to do it for you.

As for other stuff that won't matter if its f-up, lowes has books on home improvement stuff.

I subscribe to Handyman magazine and love it. I do all fixes to my house except roofs and some major electric.

all mentioned are easy do it yourself type things. Roofing and siding are easy enough I can't believe some people pay to have it done, however I used to be the one they paid so....

Roofing and siding alike remember water runs down hill, start at the bottom and work up. Most siding and shingles have directions right on them. Water is your enemy make sure there is nothing exposed that water can get in. (ie. nail head). You will need new flashings for everything on the roof (ie. vent tubes, chimney ect...), and drip edge. If there is any place the roof meets a wall (ie garage on a two story house) you will need step flash. basement water proof the walls before you do anything else. If you are doing vinal siding run the starter, j-channel and corners first. don't forget the undersill.

You can learn to do any of these things if you are the learning type. Do a little research and you'll see.

Home Depot sells a hard-cover orange book called "Home Improvement 1,2,3" that covers a ton of DIY topics. I received one as a gift when I bought my house. It's an excellent reference to start with.
