rental trucks and weigh stations

Do I really need to stop at weight stations with my 16ft Budget rental? More importantly, if I do, will the real truckers make fun of me over their CBs?

    No, and yes.

Well........let me edit my reply. The last time I rented a truck, which was a year ago, they did say (at the rental place) I had to stop for "national security" reasons, but I didn't. Drove by 4-5 of them, from CA to AZ......no problems. I'm not stopping, screw them.

It varies by state here is florida's
All commercial vehicles are required to cross the weigh stations in Florida- no matter how small the vehicle is. Anyone renting a truck for personal use is not required to cross the scales, but the weigh masters suggest that rental trucks go ahead and exit at the weigh stations. The scale masters can't tell whether a rental truck is being used commercially or not, so they may chase down a rental truck that passes by the scale without stopping. Generally, a rental truck that obeys the weigh station speed limit will be directed into the bypass lanes and return to the freeway

I drove a U-Haul from Montana to Texas and only stopped for gas. Since it wasn't being used for income (commercial) and only for personal use, I was told that you do not need to stop at any POE.

Noticed your profile say's your in Kentucky here is what your DOT say's
Total Weigh Stations & Truck Scales: 17
All trucks and commercial vehicles must weigh at Kentucky weigh stations when they are open. There is no minimum weight requirement. All trucks means all trucks- tractor trailer trucks, certainly, but also any smaller trucks. Any rental truck or pickup truck pulling a trailer is required to enter an open Kentucky weigh station.

It doesn't say if there is a fine or not and how hard they enforce it the way I read it is if you pull a trailer is when your required

< 26,000 and /or no air brakes. it is not a commercial vehicle. some states go as low as 14k.

In SD there is a Weigh In Motion scale on I-29, when I came up to it in my pickup with a 24' trailer I got the signal to pull in then got the bypass lane.

As stated some states will want you to pull in, pay attention to the signs approaching the scales, if unsure roll in. Most goes by weight and class of vehicle (Commercial) and that is mostly 26,000# Unladed Weight however some are as low as 14-14,000#. Most likely you will not encounter a scale requiring you to stop. One thing I would do and it only cost $7.00 is once you are loaded and ready to roll stop at a truck stop and roll up on a Cat Scale and weigh the vehicle and keep the scale ticket handy.
