"The World Turned Upside Down"

Extracted from interesting articles in Russian language on-line news magazines . . . .

Russia, Estonia and Bulgaria are in the process of legalizing the personal posession / CCW of handguns. This is expected to become law within the next few months. The reasoning is that they have looked to the US and noted that those areas of our country where the individual has these rights have far lower crime rates than those where these rights are limited / nonexistent. As fledgling democracies where there is a strong criminal underclass / organized crime element, they wish to protect their citizens and evolve into truly free societies.

What part of this equation escapes the liberal DemoCRAP crowd right here [?]

It is astounding to me that nations which only 12 years ago were firmly under the thumb of totalitarian regimes supported by secret police agencies like the KGB are embracing views held by the Founding Fathers of our great nation while the leftist elites here are virtually rabid in their efforts to discard those same safeguards. Does this not suggest that these leftist "idealists" actually have a hidden agenda, the subjugation of the individual to the state [?]

By no means am I suggesting that these nations have the individual / social protections / freedoms embodied in our system. But I do think it instructive that in their efforts to evolve into free societies they are seeking to emulate the rights and values so many of the "progressive" (barfing sound) elements of *our* society are so eager to discard!

The irony is extraordinary!

Ive told this story a few times, but Ill say it again. A few years ago I did a job that involved a bus ride. On the bus were a bunch of musicians, one of them being the son of Alexander Soltzhenitsen-the Soviet author who was exiled to Siberia for thirteen years. On the bus ride, the topic of gun control came up, and everyone, with the exception of myself and the son of the russian, were arguing for massive gun control, most wanted to make posession of guns by citizens completely illegal. They were all saying the gun control mantra that only police and the military should have guns. The russian couldnt believe what he was hearing, and tried to explain to these nitwits why it is important to have guns to protect yourself FROM the government. The general consensus on the bus was the poor Russian was paranoid- his father being dragged out of the night by armed guards and exiled to Siberia-and hes paranoid.
