This is one of the nicest Civil War rifled muskets I've seen in a long time. It's nice to know there are still a few out there!

Did that start it's life as a flint lock?

That is a beauty. I'd love to have an original Civil War rifle.

No. The lock is dated 1863.
That rifle almost looks too good to be true. I bought a reproduction Richmond musket last year that doesn't look much better.

No, it's one of 18,000 US Model 1861 .58 caliber rifles made by Welch, Brown and Co. of Norfolk, Ct. under contract from the US Arsenal in Springfield, Mass. It's probably unissued.

Needs a scope [^][^] Looks great. In the late '50's, my father brought home a Burnside and a few rounds of ammunition. The photo I have of it show it to be about 90%. Long gone, and always wonder what happened to it.

This is an original unfired Colt I bought in 1976 for $200. Sadly, I sold it to pay medical bills. [:(]

Looks nice, Spider. Have you got a pic of the whole gun?
Shame you had to sell it...

This is the only one I could find. I probably deleted the others.

The old man I got it from bought it in 1935 as government surplus. He paid $7 for it. He could have gotten the bayonet for an extra 50 cents but he didn't have any more money! He put it away and never fired it. I thought it was a replica until I looked it over and realized it was all original. I owned it for over 30 years but medical bills forced me to sell it. A lawyer in Texas bought it and had a special display case made for it. It was absolutely brand new and I wish I still had it. [:(]

I have never seen an original with file marks on the buttplate. It may have been cleaned up years ago. The loading rod appears to be a reproduction. THe rest of the musket is original and in fine condition.

Spider, did I mention that my Birthday is on March 6th. I realize that over the ages, the passage of time, and as our sand rapidly run low in that "Great Hour Glass" in the sky, we have become very close.
Nunn told me that you wanted to give me something very nice. That Civil War Rifle would be perfect! Or have you thought of having KA-BAR designed and produce a Commemorative Classic Ka-Bar devoted to me?

March 6th would make you a Pisces. "Go fish". [;)]
