What was involved with changing the front sight?
Just drive out the front blade and the new sight slips right over the sight base. A set screw tightens it down.
Very Nice, which kit did you end up going with?
I bought this one. It's really nice wood:

Too old to live...too young to die...
Doc, they make a do-hicky that fits to the bottom of a standard 10rd mag so that it "looks" like a 15 rd carbine mag. It does not increase capacity or do anything other that change the looks of the magazine and possibly make it easier to insert/remove the mag.

I've seen those and they are really cool. Too bad they don't make a 15 round mag that resembles an original GI box.
They do make a dummy mag that attaches to the Ruger mag but they're out of stock right now.
Nice job ! Looks really nice.
Cuomo wants that for his own collection [:D]
Nice job ! Looks really nice.
It's totally legal - unless I add a bayonet lug. [;)]
There's also a kit that looks like a Thompson. http://www.1022fungun.com/store/pc/home.asp
Been thinking about doing that. Really looks good, especially with that replica magazine.

Yeah, but that would be considered an "assault weapon" in NY State with that "deadly" pistol grip. [:(!]
Besides, I've always liked M1 carbines and this feels just like a real one but a lot cheaper to shoot.

Now you need to find one of those canvas cases for it. I think those look so neat.

I hate to admit it but I passed on an original case like that for $5 at a gun show couple years ago.[:(]

They sell them on the auction side for $22-$24.
Looks great Spider. Did the same to my 10-22. Really turned out nice than what I thought it would and easy to do. Have fun shooting.
I like the feel of it better than the thinner 10/22 stock, too.
I assume the rear uses the tapped rear weaver rail hole.
I'm thinking of doing this to mine as well.
Was the sight kit included, or a separate purchase?

The sights were a separate purchase. Yes, the rear sight comes with matching screws that use the existing scope base holes on the receiver.
The hardest part was getting that damned front blade out. It was very stubborn!
You have made at least an $800 gun out of that. Did you do any machine work on it?
Just a couple of gunsmith screwdrivers and a brass hammer & brass punch for the front sight.

You maybe closer to a $1000 gun after all that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found a nice fur-lined one and ordered it. [:)]
Very Nice, Spider!

They had a 22lr M1 carbine at the local gun shop for less than $400.00. I can't remember who maade it. It started with a C.
Probably Chiappa

I paid $20 and it's nicely lined with a fur-like material.
