Start low power and when you see something you can always turn up the power.

I use a 2-7x on my scoped deer rifle.
2.5x. If a critter pops out of the woods close I don't want to have to figure out what part of the hair in the scope to shoot at. If, on the other hand, they're at a distance, I'll have time to turn 'er up to 8x.
Yep. My scopes are mostly 3x9 and I hunt with them on 3. Of course, as much hunting as I do with pistols, I will have to ask the eye doctor what the magnification rating on my glasses is. [:I]
IE: my 3-9 & 3-10 are set on the high end, while my 12-42x is set on the low end.
Note that I'm not hunting in a swamp or dense brush situation, more of a open ground situation.
Two times during the day when you may want to dial it up is dawn and dusk. When the light is dim adjust the scope so the exit pupil matched your eye. On a 40mm scope, for me, this is usually about 5x. I just look trough the scope and adjust it to where I can see through it the best. Everybody has different eyes so just adjust to match yours.
