Hunting ammo

My wife is about out of ammo for her savage 99 in 243. She has been using Remington 100gr core loks and I'm looking at getting her something different.

I'm leaning twords federal power shoks but at almost a buck a round I'm considering there's.

Anyone ever use sellier & bellot? I see their 100gr soft points for $0.60 per round.

Also I've used prvi partisan quite a bit in my 308. But only fmj plinking ammo. Anyone ever shot a critter with their soft point?

my wife shoots the core lokts in her .243. I shoot them in my 30-06. I know you said your looking for something different. but for deer size game. I don't think you can beat them. between the two of us we have taken several deer all with the Remington ammo. always had very good performance.

and just to add. not sure if its that way at every wal mart. but the ones in my area have the Remington ammo for under 18 bucks a box. think its like 17.64 or something close. I don't buy guns at Walmart. but have stocked up on the rifle ammo.

I've pretty much decided to walk away from Remington products completely. With the bad experiences I've had personally and heard about on these forums I'd like to see Remington go the way of the dodo. I will never spend another penny on a remengton Product unless it's a firearm made before I was born.

I didn't know you had bad experiences with them. ive never had a problem with the ammo. and my Remington deer rifle was made in 1962. wife has a savage bolt in 243. ive used their stuff for so long, I have no info to give you on any other brands. but somebody else should pop in and have some good info for you.

Black box Winchester Ballistic Silvertips is what I use. A little pricey but very, very effective.

I shoot very little Remington (any caliber ) High power ammo. Winchester Super X or Hornandy performs excellent. If you want to step it up a notch from the Hornady Whitetail go with the SuperPerformance. They load 100*200 feet per second faster at the muzzle. Do know your gun ballistics. Most all ammo is tested with a 24" barrel. If you have a carbine 16 inch barrel it is not going to do the same as a 24". On the flip side my 26" 25/06 has approx 150 more fps at the muzzle than a 24" gun. Doesn't seem like much but when a gun performs at 100 yd like it would at the muzzle it is a big deal. Velocity rules... it determines energy which determines whether the animal dies quickly. Now for varmits, I use the cheap prvi partisan 100 gr pills. Use the best ammo available for big game. One box will last a long time. Just think one or two practice rds to know where the gun shoots and 18 left to kill game. So that extra 10 bucks a box over the standard stuff isn't beans.

I shot a whitetail buck several years ago using Prvi Partisan ammo. It was 165 grain soft point in 7.62X54. Performed really well. the buck only ran about 20 yards and piled up. I recovered the bullet and it was a perfect mushroom. I think it is good ammo. Don

Federal PS shouldn't be that expensive.

"Anyone ever use sellier & bellot? I see their 100gr soft points for $0.60 per round."
The S&B 243 ammo I tried showed poor accuracy and several had high pressure indicators(sticky bolt lift and flattened primers).

My initial recommendation would be Hornady American Whitetail ammo. I've not had any problems with this line.

Can't go wrong with the 95 grain Federal Fusions.

S&B ammo is made in the Czech Republic, think Brno, CZ, etc. It's good as American mass-manufactured ammo, sometimes better.
Remington went down the rabbit hole years ago, started making unsafe & inexpensive guns, then forgot that centerfire ammo needs good primers.
I haven't bought commercial ammo in over 35 years because I reload.
I can suit the load to the gun, get the ballistics I want, and save a buttload of money doing it.
If the corporate pinheads continue to screw up & overcharge for their declining product lines; they are not too big to fail.
I think Jack O'Connor was the last guncrank to recommend the .243; it's a decent round for old people and women[:)]

Remington has their rebate program going on from 8-1-17 to 10-15-17. $5 per box with a 10 box limit on core-lokt ammo. I purchased 15 boxes of their 30 rem ar 150 gr. loading because it hasn't been available. They must have made a run of it. Got it last month before the rebate. Would of loved to get $50 back.

    +1

They shoot good in my rifle.

I don't shoot much factory ammo but I really like the Federal Fusion ammo.

I have not seen a brand of ammo mentioned in this thread that I would refuse. They are all good.

I shot Remington Core-Lokt for years.
I switched to Barnes for my 338 Win Mag and 30-06 a number of years ago, and have not looked back.
Accurate, consistent, and they perform flawlessly.
A little pricey, but a box lasts quite a while!

From your high price to low price, you're at $0.40 per round.

How many rounds does she go through in a season. (Assuming she is deer hunting?).

Hunting ammo is one thing I spend on. The return of a swift kill is worth the investment

I shoot Prvi Partizan 150 gr soft points in my Ruger 16" M77. I have killed probably 12 deer with that load, and never had one go more than 30 yards. It is very accurate in my gun, but my Grandson's Ruger American likes 165 gr Hornady's. Try several different brands/weights, and let the gun tell you what to use.

Josh, Any good 100gr cup and core bullet will will work. Just get one that shoots good out of her rifle. Winchester, Federal and Hornady are all making and marketing an economical whitetail deer round now.

I will mention that I've shot some of the 95gr Federal Fusion ammo out of two different .243 rifles and it shot well out of both of them. I haven't hunted with it yet so can't say how it will do on game but I wouldn't hesitate to take it out and hunt with it.
