I hate seeing this American institution shutting down. I kind of felt the end was near when they retired the elephants.

There are still freak shows at the carnivals.[}:)]

Seriously, I knew a fellow years ago who worked as a geek in the side show during the fair season. Lived in SC and bred poodles the rest of the year, really interesting guy, I had lunch with him at the MO State Fair for several years running.

    It was primarily declining revenues.

Their own elephant people drove the push to retire the elephants.

About 18-20 or so years ago, I had the pleasure of talking to one of the owners of Carson and Barnes. Carson and Barnes was a competitor of Ringling. They put on a great show.

The owner said he would shut down later in the year and liquidate assets and sell his elephants, big cats to local zoos. He let me know ALL of their animals were raised from infancy and some of his elephants and big cats were well past life expectancy.

He told me PETA and government regulations were the reason for the shows demise. Went as far to say he was banned in some cities where they used to play because of perceived animal cruelty.

Then, too, the performers got tired of doing their best - only to realize half the audience were staring into their phones.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Well I was never a fan that anything that had clowns in it, so it doesn't bother me one bit. For those others that do it is a sad day.

I remember as a kid, my backyard was up against the railroad tracks. The circus train would roll by once a year. That's going back at least 45 years. They were the last ones to still use the railroad to get from one show to another. I guess 146 years was a good run. I'm sad to see it go.

sad thing to see them go but the money just was not there anymore .Animal rights and tree huggers were the death of them .Sad that the coming generations will never know the thrill of the circus
