He probably shouldn't get a motorcycle....

Spent the afternoon in the ER with my brother. Long story...

About 3 weeks ago, he was riding his bike back from the gym. He said he was distracted from where he was going for about 5 seconds, waving to a friend, when a car cuts around the corner and plows into him. He rolled over the hood of the vehicle, and fell to the ground on the other side of it. Chris is a pretty big, solid guy, city firefighter, and in great shape, so no injuries, not even a scratch. Close call.

Last week, he decides to buy a motorcycle, Suzuki something-or-other, to save gas. Nice bike, not my cup of tea, one of those crotch rockets. Hasn't gotten it yet, but the order is in.

This morning, I return to the office to find a voicemail from the local hospital, telling me my brother was in a bike accident, and is at the ER, he's "okay." That's it. So, I tried to call the hospital, nurse is incredibly vague, tells me he's not in his bed, likely sent to radiology, but doesn't and can't tell me any more, cannot comment on his condition, due to HIPA regs. So, off to the hospital I go. Arrive as he is being returned to his bed from a CT scan. He's pretty banged up, but no broken bones, no concussion. Will likely be hellishly sore tomorrow. Moving like an 80 year old with arthritis. He is in a very bad mood, because as an EMT, he knows EVERYONE in the ER, and they ALL had to come in and make some smart-acre remark.[:D]

So, I said to him, "How are you going to handle 100 horse when you can't even handle a bicycle?"

He shot me a look like if he could move faster, I might be worried.[;)]

He loves me...[:D]

I'm glad he is ok too.

If he keeps the motorcycle, tell him you are getting some life insurance on him. Maybe that would give him a hint. If he hasn't had enough already.

ah just having a bad riding month is all. You cant blame him for someone else not paying attention and running into him. But on bike your always a defensive driver, when you become offensive is when you lay it down.

I have said this since 1968 and have never been told I was wrong:

There are two types of motorcycle riders, those that have fallen and those that are about to fall.

The only question remaining is the type of van that carries you from the crash scene. Corner or ambulance?

Go to the local cemetary and see if you can get a 'fake' reciept for a burial plot. Present it to him and say "Don't make me use this".

All kidding aside, try your best to get him to sign up for the Basic Riders Course with http://www.msf-usa.org/ . He obviousely doesn't understand how dangerous our sport Can be, with proper training he can limit the risk factor.

You might also let him know that unless he intends to perform All of the maintainace himself he will not likely save as much as he thinks. The cost of one tire alone could put two tires on the average car, and they don't last nearly as long.

I have ridden for over 35 years and have had more than my share of close calls He must always ride in the frame of mind that everyone and i mean everyone on 4 wheels is out to play cannonball run on his butt! Never trust anyone and always be alert ,.That said I would like to welcome him to the fraternity but he needs to stay away from the crotch rockets they are accidents looking for a place to happen
