is it safe to stick with hoppies or is there some thing that would give a barrel a nicer shine? Somebody told me Blue wonder was good but i need a second thought.

    Yes..Hoppes is a good general purpose cleaner.Smell good.Old timey.

Use Sweets 7.62 after you think the barrel is really clean,tho..and get an education. The patch will come out really purty colors...

J-B bore paste will ' shine ' a bore like you won't believe...use a patch wrapped around a worn out brush...

The solvents won't give a bore a 'shine',really...just a good clean metal look...

I hate change, but after trying Blue Wonder I haven't bothered opening my bottle of Hoppes. Hope that speaks clearly enough[:D]

A NOTE OF CAUTION ABOUT J-B BOREPASTE!!!!! It is not and never was meant to be a "use it regularly" bore cleaner!!!! It is great stuff but it is actually taking metal out of that bore! It's a lapping compound! It does a super job on badly neglected, poorly maintained bores but by no means should be used as your regular cleaner!
Hoppes and Sweet's work well when used as a team. Clean the powder fouling out using Hoppe's and then use Sweet's according to directions.
Another product that I have been using more of lately is Montana Extreme. So far I have been pleasantly impressed by this product.
But please, don't use the J-B bore paste as your everyday cleaner! GHD

GD; The benchrest crowd uses J-B on a regular basis....the tests I have seen indicate it would take a LOT more strokes with a rod then any sane person would give to damage those 400 buck barrels.Even then, most of the damage would come from the rod....

The best money spent on gun cleaning is a ONE piece stainless or coated cleaning rod..and a bolt-type bore guide.
Throwing away those aluminium, spindly, jointed abortions in common cleaning kits would be a real boon to any barrel....

GHD,..Monatan extreme is sweets by any other name. The boys at Shooters Choice tell me is about the same in it's ammonia content[?].

I like sweets 7.62,...I think it works wonders,..and if used correctly is very safe. I follow it with Shooters Choice. The tech guy at Shooters Choice told me that the oils in SC were designed to protect a bore treated with something like Sweets. Hoppes,...does not have the protective quality that SC does,....if the sweets is used. By all means,...follow sweets with SC and Kroil!!!

I do use the blue wonder,..and I do beleive it is a very good cleaner.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I've used Hoppe's with success; I continue to like Hoppe's and will probably always have some around. It's one of the "staples" and it does smell good, as opposed to poisonous [:D]. I always clean & dry thoroughly after using any solvent and then apply some specialized cleaner only if needed to finish the job, before a light sheen of lubricant to keep the elements away. Since I don't shoot plain lead bullets, clean-up is not usually too bad a job. When possible, pleasant odor or not, I like to clean outdoors, just in case there's something unfriendly in the fumes.

Welcome to the zoo, yg! Good question and as you've seen, many answers! Personal experience and preference is a big factor, obviously.

Hoppe's *IS* good. If it were not, it would not have been "the" powder solvent of choice for generations. That said, there are far better products on the market today. Butch's Bore Shine and Blue Wonder will clean Hoppe's clock (pun not intentional). My personal opinion is that Blue Wonder is the best on the market, Butch's a close second and Sweet's a distant third. I'll always have Hoppe's around for my smooth bores; for those of us who grew up with it, the odor evokes more fond memories than most can list. But for a rifled bore, the newer products are vastly superior. *WHATEVER* solvent you use, follow with a thin coating of lubricant - I'm real partial to MilTech for that purpose.

Since we're on the subject, has anyone given MPro-7 a try? I hear it works wonders too. Then again, I've only used Hoppes and CLP on my guns. Call me old-fashioned but some habits are hard to break.

Hoppes for regular cleaning, blue wonder for the hard stuff.

Brake clean for hard to reach, too lazy to take apart stuff.

Dunkit, a mix of mineral spirits and breakfree for soaking.

Even if Hoppes didn't clean a lick, it would have a place on the bench just for the smell. Nothin puts me in the mood for cleaning guns as Hoppes does.

I just don't like the smell of Hoppe's, Ugh![xx(] I know that makes me one of the few, one of the proud, one of the Blue Wonder users. I also like Butch's Bore Shine a lot along with Butch's Bore Oil. I agree with Highball, do yourself a favor and get a quality cleaning rod like Bore Tech or Dewey.
