....better for what?....I've seen both O/U and side by sides in the $80,000 range, it's pretty hard to pick one over the other.

Neither is better.

What makes one better than another is your particular style of shooting and the fit of the gun.

For myself, I have both and prefer neither. The mind switches gears after a little practice and I find no difference in the number of grouse missed.

Then again, if one were to judge on my grouse score, they wouldn't even bother to load the gun.[:I]

Depends on the shooter. The best shotgun guy in our club prefers SXS. Maybe its a mental thing but can break 50 of 50 with a side by side and does much worse with an O/U or single barrel.

I really like my O/U but can shoot the same scores with my ol' Remington sportsman, semi-auto. My best score was with the sportsman.

Since you haven't yet shot any shotguns, you can try one of each and see what you like better.

You have gotten some wise council,application means alot.But for most of my Bird Hunting Ruger's Red Label over and under is good for about anything.But I have single shots, Pumps,semi-auto's and a SXS they all have a place in my safe.Good Luck!

I like them both but the only advantage I believe an over/under has over a side by side is the target picture, you don't have both them barrels obscuring what you are lookin at.

Depends on your wallet. You can get a nice sxs with chokes and a sigle selective trigger for half of what a good o&u will cost. Not that one is better its just more expensive to make o&u barrel sets.

Whatever feels most comfortable - I like my o/u because it feels better'n the sxs I had. It could be mental as stated above - but I could be mental also[:D]
