What does the "ACP" stand for in .45 ACP?

Just wondering. The only thing I can think of that isn't a foreign language would be "Automatic Colt Pistol" since, if I'm not mistaken, Colt was the first to manufacture the 1911.

Of course, that's just a guess. I have no idea. Someone please either confirm my guess as correct or totally ignorantly wrong... and then provide the right answer.

This has been bugging me for a few hours now...

Automatic Colt Pistol but, not for the Model 1911. The FIRST .45 ACP was the Model 1905.

It's nice we can agree on one caliber size. I've seen some charts where it's a millimeter more here, a few longer there, etc...until you have 500 handgun loads.

    EG 9mm, three common loads - 380ACP (9mm kutz), makarov, 9mm parabellum.
recently 9 x 22mm came up (The 9x22mm (also called 9 MAJOR) was shown at the IWA 1992 of Nuremberg by an hungarian factory called Matravideki Femmuvek Sirok)

The designation is purely cartridge driven and "ACP" will also be seen in the designations for the .25, .32, .38 and .380 . . . all "Automatic Colt Pistol," although they are known by other (often many other) names as well. When Savage was competing with Colt's small frame semiauto line (and had their own line of ammo), they produced rounds with "ASP" headstamps which are otherwise identical to the Colt/Browning versions. There are some headstamp variations such as "CAP" and "CAPH" - Colt Automatic Pistol (Hammerless).

It means "Automatic Colt Pistol". In all those other calibers, also. They may also be designated ".45 Browning, etc".

All developed by John Moses Browning.

That is why none of the 9MM cartriges (except 9MM Kurz {.380 ACP/Browning}) are designated "ACP".
