The thread about George Washington and religion made me think of a really good book about the American Revolution. It is 1776 by David McCullough.
The interesting thing that this book details is how close America came to losing the war against the British. They had so many advantages over the colonists at the start of 1776 that they should have destroyed the American armies easily. Only the determination of Washington and his generals, combined with the overconfidence of the British turned the tables by the end of the year.
It is a very enjoyable and educational book.

I'm going to start 1789: The Threshold of the Modern Age by David Andress. It follows the development of the country after the failure of the Articles of Confederation.
