I didn't see where this was already posted. Please excuse if it's already been here and I just didn't see it. No way I'm in favor of 13 y/o with a gun on school campus, but give the poor gun a break - it seems to be particularly evil in the description (I added the bold).

Teen arrested for gun at middle school

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputies arrested a 13-year-old Baton Rouge boy late Wednesday afternoon and charged him with carrying a firearm by a student on school property at Southeast Middle School on Harrell's Ferry.

The rifle is a military-style Ruger mini 14 assault rifle. The twelve high-powered rounds in the magazine were with the weapon. Research indicates the weapon is particularly dangerous with an extremely high killing power. Students told school officials on Wednesday they had seen the gun hidden in the boy's locker room. "And so, the staff took immediate action and within five minutes actually found the weapon and called school resource officers," said East Baton Rouge School System spokesman Chris Trahan.

The 13-year-old had left school early Wednesday before the rifle was found. He was arrested later at a location off campus. Something else had happened last Friday. "They found some graffiti written on the wall of a girl's bathroom talking about someone coming in and maybe causing harm to students on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday," said Principal Hollis Milton. "So the principal called security and requested extra security to come on Monday, so all the students came into the school and each class was walked through, not metal detectors, but hand wand detectors," added Trahan.

The assault rifle turned up on Wednesday. Milton says there is no connection between the graffiti incident and the gun being found on the school's campus. "Unfortunately, there was a threat and of course, then there was a weapon, that those two incidents were totally separate and we can conclusively say that," added Milton. The middle school students are 12 and 13 years old. At last word, the 13-year-old child with the deadly weapon is still in the juvenile detention center.

Well at least they did some research. I am glad they did, you should never assume that a gun is capable of killing someone. This one that they did research on with the "extremely high killing power". "Killing power", hmmm, I wonder if that is an optional feature like tritium sites? Did this gun come with "low" killing power and someone jacked it up? Maybe modified it? Or is there some sort of selector switch that you turn? Too many questions!

glad school & law were on the front end of this deal but it serves no good to sensationalize it by so called "experts" & ignorant media...sound like any firearms related news is tabloid national enquirer fodder nowadays

So which "military" goes into the field with the mini-14? Especially semi-auto. They say it's a "military style" gun. Can I get a bayonet for it?

You can for the GB version.....which, if I understand correctly, also increases the extremely high killing power, making it even more particularly dangerouser.

when I was in high school, I ran a trap line on the river just behind the school. I carried my 20/22 savage every morn put in my trunk and then checked again after school. Everyone knew it was there. I even had a teacher try to buy it once. First wife gave it to her bro after divorce.

    I had a Savage 20/22. What a great gun!
Carried it in a saddle holster for 3 months one summer on a grand adventure in the wilderness of British Columbia.
That gun will kill just about any creature in that province, you would be surprised.

My wife can shoot a "look" that will cut you off at your knees. She also can give you a look where you wished you were dead. Does that count as "killing power?"

On one of the "other" local stations a few years ago, it was reported that a coin & gun shop owner shot a dude who entered his store, broke a display case and then pointed the gun at the owner. The owner said he was not looking at the guy when he broke the glass and didn't know if he had loaded the gun or not. When the idiot anchor read the story on air, he said, "A local merchant exercised VIGILANTE justice today." I emailed the anchor to point out the misuse of "vigilante" and suggested the use of SELF-DEFENSE instead. He wrote back saying the word fit the event. Too bad people don't have much of a vocabulary anymore...and apparently don't have access to dictionaries at TV stations. Research? HA! [V][:(!]

They should have talked to me during their research, as I would have explained to them that a .223 will not kill zombies even with a head shot. Therefore it does not have "extremely high killing power".

If they're gonna rationalize gun killing power, then no school should have baseball bats, and good looking high school girls because they both have been known to crush and kill young boys.

The Rangers in "the Mog" would probably like to disagree...perhaps by bashing someone's skull in...about how "high powered" a 5.56NATO round it...

I would love to start that 5.56 vs. 7.62x39 vs. 6.8 SPC vs. 7.62x51 debate again. But I must refute your point on the Rangers. For distances 300m+ in open field combat there is nothing better 5.56 and I might dispute that as well because the 7.62x51 (.308) will reach out accurately to 800m. But if you need to punch through foliage, cinder block walls, etc. the other calibers listed above are the only way to go as .223 will not cut it.

When my best friend was in Iraq, they carried AK47 because its one and drop. The M-16 was more like 3 if you didn't get a head shot.
